Question about an Atlantics LP

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 12 Sep 2005 12:34:59

While cruzin' down to San Diego for another Surf/tiki filled
weekend in Beautiful So. Cal. I stopped by a certain shop( sorry
it's a secret) I'll drop the info later (ha ha).
Anyhow they had a Old Atlantics Lp from Austrailia. Can't remember
the title, but it was a light blue and white picture of waves and
beach if I recall correctly. It was in so so condition, and the sleve
had a little bit of water damage. They wanted 45 dollars for it.
I looked at the song titles and it seemed most of them were on the
CBS recrodings vol 1 and 2.
Should I still pick it up? I've never seen any Atlantics stuff here
in USA, But the quality and the price seem a bit outta whack.

That's their debut LP, Bombora. This album sold like hotcakes in
Australia, and you can easily get it on eBay for much less than that
(well, I did a few years ago, I don't know what it's like now). Their
subsequent two LPs are much rarer, especially their third, Explosive
Sound Of, so that one MIGHT be worth that much, but definitely not for
Bombora. It's my least favorite of their three LPs anyway (though
still good), mostly cause it's the most derivative one - they sound a
lot like the Shadows on it. Anyway, check it out on eBay, and then
see if it's worth it.
BTW, all the tracks on that LP are on CBS Complete REcordings Vol. 1,
since those two CDs were done in chronological order.

Ivan,
How did I know you were gonna answer my question.
HHMMMMMMM????? I wonder/ :)
Anyhow, I sw the bombora album on e-bay and although it looks
similar. I have to say it's not Identical to the one I saw.
And those tracks don't ring a bell either.
Now I'll have to go look at it again
I'm still not going to pay 45 for a beat to hell record. But
maybe a bit if it's a harder to find one.
How many cd's did repritore records do of the Atlantics?
were they 2 fers or what. are all the tracks the same as the
Cannetoad/CBS cds?
I wanna get all the good stuff possible. Is the 2 Cannetaod
sufficient?
thanks,
Jeff(bigtikidude)

Shit now that I think about it, it might be "the Explosive sound of"
Do you know where I can see a picture of that LP?

Quite a shocker, ain't it!!

Hmmm... Take a look here:
Is it maybe Now It's Stomping Time? That one isn't blue, though. I
can't remember what the cover of the '65 "Greatest Hits" LP looked
like (though I think it had the band on it). That's the only other
one it could be - there were just these four released in the '60s.
(The fourth one is Explosive Sound, and that one has the four of
them jumping.) Maybe it's a Japanese release? I think they had
something released there in the sixties....
> How many cd's did repritore records do of the Atlantics?

Repertoire did 2 CDs, as far as I know. The two were Now It's
Stomping Time (2nd LP) and The Explosive Sound of the Atlantics (3rd
LP). Each one had the original album with songs in the original
order, plus all the original artwork and album notes. Plus a bunch
of bonus tracks, consisting of non-album singles tracks plus the
tracks from the first album (Bombora). However, there are many
missing songs between the two CDs, both of singles-only tracks and
the tracks from the first LP. But the tracks that are there are all
the same as on the Canetoad CDs, except that Dimitrius on Explosive
Sound on Repertoire has the loud overdubbed shouting throughout the
song like the original - these were removed on the Canetoad CD.
> I wanna get all the good stuff possible. Is the 2 Cannetaod
> sufficient?
The 2 Canetoad CDs have EVERYTHING that the Atlantics did
instrumentally in the surf vein in the sixties. Once they were
dumped by CBS in '65 or so, they went on as a straight-forward vocal
rock band in the mold of the Animals and later the Yardbirds. So,
if you get the two Canetoad CDs, you have all of their surf instro
stuff. In chronological order, no less. I have those, plus the
Repertoire CDs (which I think are getting very hard to find and are
expensive to boot) cause I like the original artwork and stuff. But
you know, I'm a bit obsessive like that...

I'll just reply once here at the top,
I don't know what I was thinging. The record I saw was Now it's
stomping time. I saw the pictures on the web site, and that
settled that. I must have been looking at too many Hawiian and
Exotica albums, and mixed up what I saw. Literly hundreds of those,
and about 20 to 30 surf records, mostly Ventures, all in pretty bad
shape, with water damage on most.
Now what should I try to talk them down to price wise?
It doesn't seem to important, now that you tell me I have all the
essential stuff on the Canetoad cds.
thanks for all the info, How goes the new cd?
I heard rumors it's getting close. :-)
take care,
Jeff(bigtikidude)

Cool!

I have no idea. I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it, I think. But
it's completely up to you. I do really love that album, though!
And the original liner notes are a blast!

Not just all the essential stuff - ALL the stuff!

Very close, but it'll be a while before it's out. Hopefully mid-
December - so another three months. Anyway, all the recording is
done. Wednesday we're doing some final slight mixing tweaks, and
then it's on to mastering in Virgina. I hope all the music part of
the project is done in the next two weeks. Stay tuned!

Ivan,
Excellent, thanks for the info again. I'm gonna try to talk
them down to 20, but I have a feeling they'll be stingy about it.
But I'll be dammned if I'm gonna pay 45 for a beat to hell record.
I just got a mint copy of Surfin' Bongos by the New Demnsions today
for 10 bucks, beat that!!(not you, but the place with the Atlantics -
LP)
Can't wait for the Maderia(sp?) how the hell is that Pronounced?
Now go to bed, It's late in the Midwest and it's a school night!!
just kidding :-)
