Slackercaster Geetar Finished

stickmandw - 10 Sep 2005 14:55:42

I just finished my "Slackercaster" project. Check the "Photos"
section, Slackercaster folder. It's been a long time coming, waiting
for the neck to be completed. The guitar is Strat-shaped, but has
Jaguar {24"} scale neck. It's shape was copied from my '63 Jaguar
{sunburst}, but, is a little bit wider. The tremolo is Jaguar /
Jazzmaster style. Because of the shorter scale, the knobs needed to
located in a different location. I put the volume control near the
bridge pickup, but left a space in between so muting the high "E"
string was possible. I have a Fender mute that I'm thinking of putting
on, which will need that space so it won't hit the volume knob. Volume
swells are no problem, as well. The pickups are located in the place
as a Jaguar, and the switch for the pickups is in exactly the same
geographic location as my other Jaguars with blade switch plate. There
is no string tree. I used the Gotoh locking vintage style keys that
use a lower profiled key for the high "E', and "B" strings that gives
a little bit of back pressure behind the nut. The pickguard has the
more radical bevel found on old Fender guitars, and is more aged
looking than the pictures suggest. The pickups in it now are US
fender with over sized magnets. I may have some made by someone else,
too early to know. The paint job is blue sparkle - of course!

Dave, did you know that Shigeo of the Surf Coasters has a
sort-of-similiar guitar? He's got a strat with only 2 pickups (neck
and bridge - strat style I think) and a Jazzmaster tremolo....Great
minds think alike I guess!
What am I thinking...you guys played with them earlier this year...and
I think he had that guitar with them this time around...what did you
think of those guys?

I've seen a picture of his guitar you refer to, and it
looks like a converted Strat, with a 25.5" scale. I
think he played a normal Strat when we played with
them. I really liked the Surfcoasters, the whole band
is great, and are real crowd pleasers!
I started this guitar almost three years ago. 22
months ago, I had the second neck's construction begin
because the first neck was a 15" rather than a 7.25"
radius, and the shape was not like my '63 which was
the shape to be copied. The final neck is really nice,
with a very nicely figured rosewood board. Madagascar
rosewood, I think. I didn't want any tint in the paint
on the neck. It's interesting to have the 17th
fret-"A" position, a little easier to get to, and the
extra fret is cool, too. Gotta have for "Slanky",
among others. That trem lock for d-tuning is a must in
my world now. It's got locking Gotoh Vintage keys
which I'm still trying to figure out if they will be
OK with flatwounds.

dave - the guitar looks awesome! I am very curious, have you test
driven it yet? how does it sound, is it (very) different then a jag? -
it seems like the only thing different is the body shape.
