"Apache"

hbseacliff - 10 Sep 2005 13:17:48

In many cases I think the original version of a song is the best.
While The original Apache is great, I was always been a fan of the
version by Paul Johnson off the live Surfers Paradise album. I
recently heard Apache by Jon & The Nightriders off their Fiberglass
Rocket album. Wow! How can a human play that well? Just curious if
anyone else had any thoughts...

I think if the Surf Coasters version were on a recorded format then it
would be one of my favorites. It is not so Jon and the Nightriders is
probably my favorite. The intro is awesome. How much of that is Dave?

That is what I thought. It really sounds like your style. Especially
the intro portion. It is like Into the Blue Sparkle and Glide. Only
thing I could do without in that song is the saxaphone, which I think
sounds surprisingly good for sax. I hate the sax more than anything so
I am biased against it.

The sound is tremendous. I'm curious about the guitar (Strat or Jag?)
amp & effects if any used for that sound. I heard this version for the
first time yesterday on the AOL radio surf station & was stoked.... I
thought the sax part was a nice touch.

For Apache I used my '58 Strat, '64 Fender Super
Reverb, and a tube Echoplex, and either my '65, or '62
Fender Reverb Unit. I use a buffer amp in a little box
you have probably seen on my guitar strap at gigs.
This helps the guitar sound to stay very natural, and
not get muddy when I turn down the volume control. The
guy who had the home studio where we recorded was a
little bit eccentric. {PC version} and insisted that I
put my amp in the closet {clothes} to record. At least
that's not as bad a guy who worked at Fender who
recorded there, who was forced to put his Super Reverb
in a Volvo!
thanks for passing on your nice words about the song!
I haven;t heard it years, I think I'll check out the
whole CD today.- dave

Thanks for the tecnical info. Tremendous sound right out of the

-Dave,
If that Guy who recorded you is who I think you mean it is.
I'd be careful, he might be lurking here as well at cowabunga. :-)

Last September the city of Burbank held a concert series called "Beach
Party Nights". There was one band that played a really eloquent
version of Apache and Pipeline. I think the band was the Surf City All-
Stars.

It sounds great and is a wonderful arrangement. I
really like that you didn't use any "swishing arrow"
string swipes that every other version uses. It's
refreshing. I drove all over town today and that's the
only song I listened to, over and over again. Drove my
passenger nuts.
Thanks

Actually, only a minority of version of Apache use the string swipes.
Most mimic the Shadows, not Jorgen Ingmann.
My favorite version of Apache EVER is Pollo Del Mar's live take that
starts as Little Drummer Boy. Superb!

See! This is exaclty the kind of information I can't get anywhere
else. I thought I knew surf until I discovered Reverb Central and
your radio show, five years ago, and realized how much I had to
learn. I'm just in a position to get a high-speed connection, but it
would be almost pointless now, with you retiring from KFJC.
There will be a void on Saturday nights.
Thanks for playing the Swamp Coolers on your show!

Thanks for playing it tonight! I thought I would never get to hear it unless you
played it.
You've turned on a lot of new music to a lot of people.

Those "surf" midi's are indeed purdy awfull for the listening. On the other
hand, they make nice practice files particularly for beginners. By opening those
in Cakewalk or somesuch multitrack midi program, a guitarist can mute the lead
guitar track and have a background to play against.
