Okay, here are some new reverb issues. I had all kinds of sproingy
sounds coming out of my Fender tube reverb unit (think "Pipeline"
intro), so I've moved it up onto a shelf. Problem solved. Now, how do
I shock-proof the amp for live gigs? Or am I needlessly worrying? I'm
sure many solutions will be proposed!
Second, my Reverb is real trebly. I did the 6K6 tube replacement, and
it didn't improve considerably. I have played with the other 12AT and
7025 tubes, and even with nice Ei replacements, it's still screechy. I
don't want to do the cap switch - too techical for moi. Are there
other suggestions? AS it is, I don't even turn the tone pot past "2"
(but put the dwell and mix at 8 or 9!)
BTW, this group has been great. It keeps me focused and playin,' so
thanks to all.
Gavin
Gavin:
For your first question, isolation seems to be the key - I've heard stories
of people like Pete Curry using bungee cords to isolate the tank in a
frame-like structure . . . I'm sure others on the list will have some actual
field-tested solutions.
I'm assuming that you have a RI tank (I forget, I'm sure you've mentioned it
before . . . ) One non-invasive technique to take the edge off of the
treble is to replace the 12AX7/7025 tube with another 12AT7 (NOS, of
course). The 12AT7 has about 70% of the gain of a 12AX7, so it really tames
the screech, but still allows the tank to sound great. That's a quick,
easy, and reversable cure, IMO. Also, I think if you back off the dwell and
mix controls to below "7", you should be able to turn the tone pot up
without having your ears bleed. However, that may sacrifice some of the
sproing you're looking for - try using the 12AT7 instead of the 12AX7 - I
think you will be pleased with the results.
Good luck!
-Dick

Hey Gavin,
Give 6-6-6 a try and see what you think, but make sure any and all
ONBOARD reverb is turned off. A reverb tank through onboard reverb has a
mushing effect which removes the "drip" and makes it more of a "warble".
Also, try keeping your reverb tank NEXT to your amp, and not in front of it.
If you're already doing that, then the only explanation for the sproingy
sounds would be something like you're standing on a "soft" floor which has
some flex to it and you're jumping around or something.
As for changing your tube...you're on the right track, but without the
cap change too, you're not really seeing the effect. The theory (if I
remember correctly) is that the cap delivers LESS power to the NOS tube,
which has a lower power rating, and without the cap change, your dumping a
lot more power on the NOS tube than it was rated for.
I used to know the theory perfectly, but it's been a while.

I have the same problem with my RI tank...it produces these evil
harsh high frequency overtones if the tone nob is past 2 or 3. I
have done the cap mod and run a 1952 NOS 6k6 in it. Can someone
confirm that using a 12AT7 instead of the 12AX7 will solve this
problem? I'm at the end of the line for mods to fix it and am hoping
this will do the trick. Think it will?

I would change the cap from the tone control C9 which is original 10nF. This
is the cap that cuts the high frequencies. Try 15nF or 22nF( 400Volt.)
Good luck

another possibillity would be soldering a capacitor across R13. This is a
1Meg resistor connected to pin 2 of the 12AX7 tube. You can try a cap in the
range of 100pF up to 220pF and see (hear) what works best.
Needless to say that you should take all safety precautions and if you are
not at ease with it you should leave it to a pro.

Thanks for the suggestions. I switched out the C10 cap a long time
but I'm a little hesitant to mess with C9. You don't think switching
the 12AX7 with a 12AT7 will help much?
Also, anybody taken out the circuit card? If so, how did that effect
your tank's sound? Anyone know of a good site that explains how to
remove it?
Thanks!

I picked up an 12AT7 at lunch so I'll try replacing the 12ATX with it
when I get home and will post if it helped fix the problem. If it
doesn't, I guess I'll try changing the C9 cap as well...
