Re: Re: Re: More Reverb tank questions

Tom Hinders (tsunamisoul) - 11 Dec 2002 21:23:53

Hey Dano,
This one is actually the second Fender brown tolex Jag case I've bought this
year! At the end of the summer, I bought a white MIJ Jag and that's when I
bought my first Fender brown tolex case for it from Musicians Friend. The
white Jag looks fantastic in that case. I really like the vintage look to
the case. I think that it's the same type case that some of the new American
Jags come with, but I'm not sure. Well, two weeks ago I was in the Cleveland
Sam Ash store and they had a sunburst MIJ Jag hanging there that, when I saw
it, I just couldn't stop myself from also buying. Actually, I traded for it.
Anyway, this sunburst Jag will also look great in a brown tolex case, which
is what prompted me to order another one for it. The cases cost $139, which
might be a lot when compared with what I paid for the Jags themselves, but I
truly love both of these guitars and they deserve the nice cases. By the
way, I also have some Seymour Duncan pickups for my white Jag coming. I
can't wait to hear how they sound.
While I'm at it, I'd like to ask where to get NOS tubes for my reissue
reverb unit? I see some stores on the Internet that carry them, but can
anybody recommend one in particular? Or, would it perhaps be better to go to
a local store?
Thanks again,
Tom

Tom:
Sounds like you have a nice pair of "twins", there . . . very sweet!
As far as the tubes go, I'm not sure how much success you'll have with a
local store. Although I haven't done business with them, KCA NOS tubes
seems fairly decent in terms of stock and prices - Mike (the owner) seems
very knowledgeable as well. They're at
Also, Antique Electronic Supply (www.tubesandmore.com) has a lot of tubes
and related "vintage" components/wiring/speaker cloth, etc. I have done
business with them (not for tubes, though) and they are very fast and
reliable.
Good luck - you will *love* the NOS sound!

Thanks for the lead Tom,
As for NOS tubes, I like to go through either or else theres a place near my house who will
have NOS tubes LONG after the rest of the world is out of them. I still
remember the day I went in there and asked for the tubes I needed, the woman
just stood there, stared at me in disbelief through her cokebottle glasses
that were so thick you could torture ants with them on a sunny day, blinked
twice...and 6 seconds later said "You want tubes?"
Not many people around here into vintage tubes...

Just to kick in my two cents about the whole reverb issue...
I just recently obtained an outboard reverb (thanks to Rudy and Dano)
with the cap'n'tube mod done. It sounds like an absolute dream.
Like Dick said before, keep the tank to the side of your amp, where
hopefully those nasty little sound waves can't disturb your precious
springs.
Also, as far as hanging the tank goes, I recommend it. Setting a
tank on the floor is fine, there really isn't a world of difference
in the sounds, but here and there, a suspended tank can make things
sound just that much sweeter. And on to my "Mr. Ingenious" tip for
hanging a tank....
Remember when you used to go visit grandma, and she'd always have her
walker next to the chair? Remember how easy it was to fold up that
walker and stick it into your trunk or back seat? That walker has
almost the exact width and depth measurments of a Fender Tank! Get
yourself two bungee cords, and hang your tank from a nice cheap-o
aluminum walker! Portable, light weight, and just too funny to pass
up!

Pretty funny. Be sure to put a "KICK ME" sign on it too.

Brian,
Now that you put the idea in my head, how could I not?!?!?!
I have recently been kicking aroudn the idea of "souping up" the
walker a little (ie side-view mirrors, etc) in the spirit of mods and
their Vespas, but can't find any modifications portable enough to be
funny, noticeable, AND fit in the back of my car...
Wow... there's a whole new group for me... "CuztomizeYourWalker"!
Dear Lord, it's late.
