Piltdown Men (was: Mar-Kets and Surfer's Stomp)

fiberglassrocket - 08 Sep 2005 12:02:45

DP,
I'm not sure what your question is. Yes, "Brontosaurus Stomp" was before
"Surfer's Stomp" (1960 versus 1961). Same genre and circa???? No. The
earlier discussion was prompted by someone wondering about the first "surf"
recordings. The only record by The Piltdown Men that qualified, even
marginally, was "Night Surfin'" in late '62, a full year after "Surfer's
Stomp." The only thing in common with these recordings was that they were
made by studio groups.

John:
What about the Piltdown Men and their "Brontosaurus
Stomp"???...
wasn't that before the Mar-Kets "Surfer's Stomp"?
or, were they simply two examples from the same genre and
circa?
inquiring minds woulld like to know,

I guess my question was focused on the "Stomp" dance
craze/fad...
Wasn't the "Surfer's Stomp" an offshoot of the "Stomp"
dance movement?
In a sense, wasn't "Stomping" sort of a proto-punk
freestyle type of dance? Sort of like a very tame early
version of "slamming/moshing" from the 80s and 90s.
the relation to surf would be that the development of
instrumental surf had a certain "dance" component and
several "dance" influences.

I'd generally agree with DP's assessment below. Although I doubt the
"Stomp" was much of a dance craze at the time, it appears that Joe Saraceno
(producer of The Mar-Kets) certainly tried to make it so. Regardless of
the type of a dance it was, it would appear that instrumental surf music --
at least in its infancy during the last couple of months of 1961 -- did
have a strong dance component.
Remember that "Let's Go Trippin'" (the acknowledged first "surf" record)
was based on a dance apparently called the "stomp" that Dick Dale's
audiences were doing at the Rendezvous in 1961. The story goes that
Saraceno was inspired to create and produce "Surfer's Stomp" after he saw a
bunch of kids dancing the "stomp" in some club while "Trippin'" played on a
jukebox.

Yes, the Marketts (originally Mar-Kets) recorded one version of that tune.
Ah, the Atomic Cafe. J&TNs actually played there twice, the second time
with Laika. What a great night that was, too...one that I still fondly
remember. A nice club, great audience, and my favorite German city!!! Ich
liebe Munchen.
