Dick Dale, webmaster (was Dick Dale invented Surf in the 50s?)

When I visited Mr. Dale at the Skyranch a while back, he
was sitting at his Apple G4 updating his site. We had a
little bit of discussion re: his site design aesthetics. He
believes that the varied size fonts and different color
fonts "makes his site easier to read" (yikes!) He also
seems to think that there is some sort of logic to his
somewhat haphazard navigation/link/web architecture setup.
He believes that "it's easy to find information" at his
site because "all you have to do is keep scrolling down".
(double-yipes!)
Dick is super-loyal to his close pals...his buddy Carlos
designed the "flashing-eyed Dick Dale Skull" logo and the
navigation buttons. That's why those features remain,
because Dick likes those garrish features, and his buddy
Carlos created them.
The impression I got was that Mr. Dale is perfectly
satisfied with the way his site looks and works
(amatuerish, at best...downright annoying and an eyesore at
worst)...additionally, he is also satisfied because he
understands his sites geography and framework and can
easily update his own site at will. In other words, the
site seems to work for Dick, so why change it?
One thing is for sure, the King of Surf Guitar is
definately not the King of Web Design.
God Bless the King!

well, it's suggests 'functionality over design' (anti-ikeafication
statement) and a 'do it all yourself' ethics.
both of which I like a lot and fit with the image I have of DD.
as much as i appreciate well designed sites, I like the crapy blogish
design, the pics of his pets and the tourbus, and the entire 'well,
it's in the air, now let's not worry about design and do something
useful like playing guitar' - attitude.
a site I like a lot is phantom frank's www.phantomfrank.nl (put
sound on!) and i also like the anarchistic chaotic site of lillte
steven's site, forgot the name and adress.

WR:
Dick Dale is definately a DIY type of guy...
As for the "functionality over design" aspect of his site,
I appears to serves Dick's purposes well...I guess
ultimately, www.dickdale.com is what it is...a reflection
of the man who created and maintains it.
I enjoyed viewing Phantom Frank's site, highly-functional
design and very "viewer friendly".
thanks
