Re: [SurfGuitar101] Digest Number 1483

Kawika Liu (kaolelo) - 02 Sep 2005 21:46:07

just a quick question: has there ever been a surf
fundraising song, like feed the world or something?
since water did most of this damage, maybe it would be
good to put something together from the water, so to
speak to help it heal? i know that it would be minor,
but something?

Granted, The Marketts' "Surfers Stomp" was released at the beginning of
1962, but, I never considered them a Surf Band, and IMHO none of their
earliest music was any surfier than Strange Dave Rosenberg
now I've seen everything
The Marketts mentioned in the same sentence as Strange Dave Rosenberg!!
speaking of the Marketts, I cannot believe how many 'surf' bands still play that
great tune, OUT OF LIMITS, both live, and on record! It is a classic. But also
surprised at how many times I see it named as "Outer Limits". (e.g., the new CD
I just got from Spain's Los Derrumbes).
can someone help me with some of the 'sounds' on that original recording?
what's making that 'chicka-chicka-chicka' clattering (don't know how else to
describe it) on the record? a 'crunching', (marracas? probably not? more like
someone crumpling up paper...clueless what's making that 'noise'); and I think
I hear some kind of 'bell' or 'triangle' being tapped on throughout parts of the
song? there are a lot of interesting background and foregrounds sounds on that
record....would love for someone to expand upon that

To clarify a bit, Prior to recording Out Of Limits, The Marketts' sirf-entitled
songs had no discernable guitar work, were mainly keyboards and horns, that
could be viewed as MOR music with a slight jazz influence. This is what I
always felt, when listening to Surfers Stomp and Balboa Blue.
It wasn't until they recorded Out Of Limits that the guitar was put up-front in
the arrangements, and the keyboards took a more "background" place in the mix,
but they didn't even release Out Of Limits until 1964!
I always thought that "chicka chicka chicka" sound was castanets.
