first surf lp

Marty Tippens (mctippens) - 02 Sep 2005 14:42:35

Hey John,
I always considered the Challengers "Surfbeat" to be the first surf lp. When you
did the first J&TN "Surfbeat '80" was it titled with that notion in mind, making
the "first" surf lp of the new surf era?

While Dick certainly practiced his unique guitar style in the 50s, the term
"surf music" wasn't connected to his playing until 1961. There was a
specific time and place, and set of conditions that allowed that to happen.

Don't be confused. "Surfer's Choice" wasn't released in the 50s. It was
released in 1962. First surf album? Debatable. Most likely, that claim
goes to the Challengers' "Surfbeat." Even the Mar-Kets' "Surfer's Stomp"
album was released before "Surfer's Choice."

The above paragraph was poorly written, inaccurate, and misleading. It's
true that "Surfer's Choice" sold like hotcakes, primarily in Southern
California. I don't know how accurate the 88,000 figure is, but the number
was certainly quite large and in the many thousands. It just wasn't
released in the late 50s.

Depends on how you define "surf LP." The Mar-Kets' "Surfer's Stomp" LP
(April, 1962) predated The Challengers' LP (which was around 11/62 I
think).....I don't have access to the specific dates right now and some of
the dates related to this subject in the last edition of my book are not
correct. However, few would consider the Mar-Kets' LP a "surf LP."
Regardless, "Surfer's Stomp" was a national hit and the first to have used
a surfing term. It's important from that standpoint.
I think The Challengers' first LP can be considered the first surf
instrumental album in the traditional sense (if you disregard their vocal
attempt at "Surfin' Safari" on the few 1st pressings that were
released...it was replaced with an instro version on 2nd pressings).
However, when you're talking about the late 1961 and early 1962 time frame,
the difference in release dates for some recordings could be a matter of
days, not months. The chronology can easily get confused.
Regarding "Surfbeat '80," no there was no implied connection to The
Challengers at all. In fact, as I recall, it was Greg Shaw at Bomp who
suggested the album title.

Aha! I was wondering why my lp had the vocal Surfin' Safari and the CD reissue
had an instro version.
