Back in the mid '90s when we first put the X-Rays
together, we went on a rampage, collecting the older
small Dual Showman cabinets, We were able to pick 'em
up real cheap as most of them had speaker issues. I
figured I'd be real smart and have them all reconed
for say about $100. As I felt the factory could do
the best job, I sent the first two out for evaluation.
Then I got THE NEWS.....The REAL early '60s JBL's had
a .056 voice coil slot as opposed to the .076 slot
used since the later of the D-models. Not only did
this tighter slot up the efficency, but it made the
voice coil difficult to cool.....doomed to high
wattage failure...Now, the good people at JBL went to
work on this, opened the slot up for cooling and went
on their way. As best as I know, all K-series and
E-series speakers use the .076 slot.....Now, what does
this mean.......Quite simply this. JBL told me that
NO parts exist any more (and this was 1995 or so) for
those affected D-model speakers and as such, they
would require modification at the factory to allow
modern E-series parts to be used for recones.....So,
if your local TRUSTED recone dude tells you he has
"factory" D-series parts, BEWARE!!!!, the factory
sez it ain't so. Call em and ask em.....my quote from
JBL was about $250 each to modify the slot, recone
with E-series parts, remag and ship back the
speaker....as I have 7 dead ones, I felt this was
outrageous, pulled out all the marginal JBL's and
replaced them with EV-15L's. I've used these 15L's
for years in PA's, Bass Cabs, stage monitors and since
the mid 90's in my lead cabinets and NEVER had the
first one fail...Eddie likes 'em!!!!Oh yeah, also JBL
told me that the D-series speaker with a gold colored
face plate (under the spider) had the larger slot.
you can get a numbered drill bit that .076 dia and
slide it in the slot to check size IF the speaker has
its cone removed...great, huh? Treat those sill
working JBL with tender loving care. They sound
fabulous, and.....They don't make em like they used
to.....Eddie, glad to help, Katcher.

Eddie,
That's interesting. I bought a 1966 Dual Showman with cabinet that had
a JBL D130F and a D140F. One speaker was really bad, the other
marginal. I had Weber recone them, and he didn't mention anything
about this issue to me. Maybe he just left the slots alone. Only
charged me about $75 a speaker as I recall. Did a great job.
Regards,
BN

Of course, I could very well have the later series D models. Sorry,
Eddie, didn't read your post close enough.
BN
I heard the story that fender used to use D130's (not an instrument
speaker per se), which blew up rather often, and then JBL did an
upgrade making them handle more power (wider slot?), on Fender's
request, and that's when and why they added the ~F. so, there might be
three versions d130, d130f small slot, d130f wide slot - or the guy at
jbl might be confused. I wonder (really wonder, not to be cynical) how
much JBL expertise there's still left with the jbl company, cause I
heard that the 'real' JBL people went over to altec. this coming from a
friend whose knowledge is in tube hifi stuff, so I really don 't know
wheter it is true. If anyone knows the real story please enlighten me.
