Re: New Jensen speakers vs. JBL's and a question

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 01 Sep 2005 23:08:49

-Bruce,
That's cool I guess. I'd still like to hear it in Person.
I know that the regular Jensen's don't have the oomph that I
like. But these are probably totally different.
Too bad I'm gonna be at the CHUM show at the Surf Museum when you
guys are playin' in Orange.
Now what about price of the new Jensen Speakers as opposed to the
OLD JBL's or new JBL equivilant???

Power Block 150 Watt amp. I promised to also post my critique of the
new ultra lightweight Jensen "Neo" speakers. As much as I love the
extra punch of a pair of EV's or JBL's being driven by my Twin
Reverb, those speakers weigh a TON!! The weight of the cab with
speakers is right around 100 lbs! Since my keeping an open mind
allowed me to "discover" a great new lightweight amp, (after hearing
the very positive reactions that Marty Tippens and Rob Woolsey have
expressed), I felt I might benefit by taking a gamble on the $200.00
for a pair of the new 16-ohm Jensen "Neo" 100 Watt 12" speakers, with
the ultra-light-weight neodymium magnets, so Saturday, August 20, I
ordered a pair of 16-ohm speakers from Antique Electronic Supply, and
they arrived the next Wednesday.

noticed was that the speaker cab (with the Jensens loaded) feels
light enough to be empty!! It's THAT big a difference! It feels like
at least a 50 lb weight reduction! Two 16-ohm speakers wired in
parallel, yields a combined impedance of 8-ohms, exactly what the
Crate Power Block's mono 150 watt combined speaker-jack calls for.

the ballsiness, especially on the bass-end, of speakers that don't
have massive, heavy magnets and coils. The real acid test will be
using them live, but in my rehearsal room, they sound every bit as
full-range, as the EV's ever did!!

> Matt'ra fact, I put my iced limeade, about 20 oz in a 7" tall
glass, on top of the speaker cab, while playing a muted reverb
rhythm, and the vibration of the bass frequencies upset the glass and
spilled my limeade all over the floor! Between the Crate Power Block
and the Jensen neodymium speakers, there seems to be quite enough
bottom-end for me, and I like lots of bottom-end!

area - many will disagree with me, and who am I to say they're wrong?
What works for me, may or may not be to your liking. But, simply put,
the Crate Power Block 150 Watt micro-size, ultra light-weight amp,
has proven acceptable to surf guitarists in 3 active, well-regarded
Southern California surf bands, all of whom pride themselves on
keeping a faithful "trad" sound, and THAT should be meaningful to at
least some folks.
>
> Going the next logical step, to the Jensen neodymium ultra light-
weight speakers involves minimal loss of speaker "grunt" from the
JBL's and EV's I've historically used, while making a quantum
improvement in ease of transporting and carrying my rig. Again, this
is my opinion, based on having purchased the speakers, installing
them in a vintage Fender cab, and then playing the amp with all EQ's
set at Maximum Bass. These new Jensens handled the task without
breaking a sweat, or breaking up in any way. The bass was so boomy,
the "tilt-back" hardware was rattling and buzzing until I stuffed a
rag around it!
>
> This amp and speaker combination is definitely a winner as far as
I'm concerned. Suddenly, the prospect of larger venues that require
us to bring our most powerful rigs, is no longer as intimidating as
it was up til 2 weeks ago! Anyone reading this, who needs a Twin
Reverb-level of amp and speaker power, should try to keep a
sufficiently open mind, to give this new Crate amp and the new
lightweight Jensen speakers, a fair and objective trial. Who knows,
like me, you might be very pleasantly surprised!

Hi Jeff,
Although I'm very irate with that Frank Delucca bozo, posting and signing MY
name to his postings, his information in his response to you, was pretty
accurate, including Antique Electronics Supply's price for the Jensen Neodymium
speaker. I checked on ebay, and find that the JBL's that we all know and love
from the glory days, haven't been produced in years.
This makes the classic JBL guitar speakers a collectors' item, and they command
collector's prices. I saw one JBL speaker that had no cone, (so it needs a $100
re-cone job) on which the minimum bid was $99. I saw others where the bids are
moving in the $250 to $300 direction.
I like the new Jensens - and as I said, they replace a pair of near-mint EV
12L's from my Bandmaster Cab. The new speaker has mucho cojones, and a very
satisfying bass-end.
And, I hope this proves the point - you won't even be at our show to help me lug
the heavy stuff, like you promised in your earlier posting, when you called us
"OLD MEN" for wanting to lighten the weight of our rigs! So I'll be carrying
main and backup amps plus speakers with a total weight of around 70 lbs. versus
about 240 lbs. before I got the Crate Power Block and Jensen lightweight
speakers!
Have fun on Sunday!
Regards,
Bruce D
