the state of SoCal surf music

ipongrac - 30 Aug 2005 00:42:29

I was wondering how surf music is doing in its birthplace of Southern
California. In particular, I am curious to hear whether there are any
NEW bands (forming since, say, '02) consisting of younger guys,
meaning in their twenties and thirties. If there are bands like
these, have they released anything?

Stingrays come to mind. "Don't Fear The Reverb" Cd. Those guys were right out
of highschool. I'm not sure if they're together anymore.

Yeah, the Stringrays are the only young group I can think of as well and they
haven't played in a long time. It's hard to win kids around here over to surf.
The kids are so impressed with distortion guitar. I'll bring a guitar into a
classroom of 18 - 21 year olds and play Miserlou and that gets a good response
but when I hit the distortion and do a wanna-be EVH lick, the eyes really light
up and everyone wants to sign up for the Guitar Club. I actually do run a Guitar
Club and I'll get the room to play Baja, Miserlou, Pipeline etc..The beginners
doing the rhythm and the intermediates playing the melody but before I walk in
the room, the intermediates are all playing Metalica or some such with heavy
distortion. So now and then I'll let them teach me one of their fav's and we'll
work it up for the group.
The only new surf band of any age in So Cal that is really active is Outer Wave.
There are other new bands that spring up but most are mixes of the usual cast of
characters that do a gig or two.

Ivan,
Have you heard of the Volcanics? www.myspace.com/thevolcanics
These guys, in my opinion are one of the best surf bands out there
today. We're kicking around the idea of going out sometime in July
and trying to do a show with them.

Ivan, All,
I see there are alot of responses to this question but i haven't
read them yet.
I did see the Volcanics and Infrareds mentioned.
I am sure there are some bands brewing, mabye on myspace they can be
found. Or Ask Kristena Hernandez, she has a Myspace group with
like 5 or 600 people on it. Lots of them bands.
She siad there was a Party in So.Cal. last weekend with a Band
with Headhunters in the title. But I couldn't go, as I was on tour
with CHUM for their Nor. Cal. tour.
I would like to see more new bands in So. Cal.
But there has been tons of surf shows this spring/summer.
Sorry I don't post about all of them like I used to.
I still get razzed form friends for not reviewing stuff like I used
to. But I just ran out of steam. But I still go to 99 % of the shows.
