jag shopping

mom_surfing - 27 Aug 2005 19:55:58

-thanks everyone for their imput about jaguars. a friend of a friend
lent me his MIJ 62 reissue jazzmaster and i'm going to play it for a
few days. it is a beautiful guitar. when he had it set up he replaced
the saddle with a mustang one and he too said he was having trouble
with the bar flopping around and one of his friends suggested earth
magnets which work really well. (i'd never heard of an earth magnet
before, but they are tiny little magnets with a lot of power) to my
ears it's definitely got a deeper sound than my strat and he's only
got 10's on it, so i can only imagine what some heavier strings would do.

I have a US jag and it's all I play, but that's because my strat is
a "96" the pickups in the "96" sound great through a Marshall Stack
but have too much bottom end for my opinion of a surf tone. If you
bought a budget jag, you could always swap the pickups with reissues
from fender I'd think. Paul.

Two weeks ago I bought a Fiesta Red '96 CIJ Jaguar (with Mustang
saddles and stock electronics) from Guitargui in Japan on Ebay for
$550 US plus $90 shipping (Which took 4 days, door to door...GREAT
service!). On Friday night I took the Jaguar to rehersal along with my
regular guitar. ( a re-issue MIJ Mosrite) When rehersal began, I
handed the other guitarist (A 23 year old newbie to playing surf music
who's been playing a strat) the Jaguar and told him "Try this". 30
seconds into a Ventures warm up tune everyone in the band looked at
each other with a WOW look on their faces. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IN SOUND!
Even with the stock pickups there was such a noticeable difference in
tone.....it just sounded RIGHT! This guitar was half or less than the
price of an AVRI and even without the electronic mods just plain kicks
a$$ for surf sound. I do plan on having the guitar professionally set
up as I think there is room for playability improvement, and
eventually want to put in better pick ups and pots in the lead
circuit, but for now, it really fills the bill for the sound we've
been looking for. IMHO,the CIJ/MIJ versions of the Jags are excellent
bargains as stock guitars, and with a $150 + worth of improvements are
every bit as good (or maybe better) than their double the price AVRI
cousins. BTW, the guitar was being played thru a reissue reverb tank
and a Fender 1000 amp.

Ah but did you really do a true A/B test comparing the two guitars.?! (snicker,
snicker). There are so many subconscious factors to consider. I mean a Fiesta
Red Jaguar is bright, beautiful, and says "surf guitar" all over it. Of course
a Mosrite also has some cool surf appeal as well, but when the new Jag comes
into the room, that Mosrite is the old hag.
