surf mandolin (electric mando strings?)

DP (noetical1) - 27 Aug 2005 15:04:03

howdy reverb heads,
my new Epiphone Mandobird VIII just arrived: its a
cool/cheesy single-coil solid-body 8-string electric
mandolin (made in Indonesia). sounds swell through the old
Fender Amp and Reverb!
i didn't consider new strings, though ...anyone out there
know where I can find nickel or stainless steel BALL-END
8-string mandolin strings? i checked www.juststrings.com
but their mandolin pages are a little vague. seems like
d'addario might make the ball-end electric set i'm looking
for, but i'm not sure.
most manufacturers seem to make bronze LOOP-END strings for
country/bluegrass accoustic mando players.
thanks for any help you can provide,
-dp
ps: i think I'll try an ultra high version of "pipeline"
today, "Miserlou" sounds cool...maybe "Penetration" will
sound good...

Howdy dp, I don't have a mandolin but I do have a Mosrite Mini which
also is a lot of fun for higher pitched versions of the classics!

Hey DP -
I remember someone joining this list a while back, and he added a link
to these crazy guys. Maybe you could find out some more info over there:
Good luck and let us know how it sounds...
BN
PS It looks like I am coming out your way the week of 9/11.

Klas:
Is that Mosrite Mini tuned EADGBE (except one octave higher
than standard pitch)? Do you use normal guitar strings?
The Mandobird VIII is tuned in pairs: GGDDAAEE...tuned in
fifths rather than fourths (like a guitar or bass).
I might give the Mandobird a try tuned EEAADDGG like a
guitar or bass someday...but, I am attemting to learn some
"straight" mando chords and scales right now.

DP, I have it tuned B-x-x-x-x-B which I think sounds the best. I'm
using normal guitar strings (Pyramid .10 roundwounds).
