still shopping for a jag.....

mom_surfing - 26 Aug 2005 13:56:51

well, i checked all the guitar stores up in the norfolk area of
virginia and found ONE jaguar and it's a japanese HH. it was really
cool to play with the humbuckers. my ears still keep pulling me
towards the fatter tone over the thinner, which reminded me of a tele.
(please excuse my descriptions of things as i have a hard time with my
written thoughts at times) but, the HH has no whammy bar and i still
have this thing about the stuff made in the USA even though this was a
beautiful guitar. the salesman said the AV jag leans more towards the
thinner sound (is this true?) and if so could part of this be remedied
by heavier strings since it seems all the in stock guitars all have
9's on them. plus he said it will go out of tune easy because of the
whammy. has this been a problem to those of you who have them?.......
i played it through a holy grail and not a tank. the holy grail had
some cool sounds but certainly didn't sound like the tank......i'm
still leaning towards the AV but am just trying to get opinions before
plunking down my hard earned $$$$$ thanks, carol

Carol...the salesmen guy is messed up. If you buy an AV Jag and put
some 12's on it, you won't get a thin sound at all. If you have the
cash, I say go for the AV RI. I LOVE mine.

Hey Carol, I just came from one of our local music
stores which has both a White Jazzmaster and also a
White Jaguar....these are both New which were
purchased by the store here from a store in Florida.
They are both pristine and can be had for about 1200
give or take a little....I might also still be able to
pick one up for cost plus from my sponsor....That
usually runs about 1150 but they are "sight unseen".
I actually got one new that was unacceptable and I had
to end up selling it as I couldn't live with the
neck....and had to order a replacement....Keep this in
mind....Most of the new AVRI JM's and Jags I have
picked up off the shelf were pretty much
unplayable....I had to re-slot the nuts, straighten
and shim the necks as well as adjust and secure the
bridge and modify the trem arm so it would stay put
and not flop around on all three of my AVRI
Jazzmasters and Jaguar.....for what they cost I can't
believe they get out Fender's door in such
shape.....However......once these new guitars are
tweaked, they rock and in my opinion, rival anything
built in the 60's. (I gave up my vintage ones because
the AVRI's are THAT GOOD when lovingly set up and cost
half as much).....ed

I've been flamed-at in the past for my advocacy of the Japanese alder-body
Jazzmaster and Jaguar R/I's that were imported here in 2003/2004. At the price,
they struck me as a great bargain, and I bought several. NOT ONE had anything
even remotely approaching the defects and problems you highlight below,
indicating that the Japanese quality standards STILL blow the AV assembly and
set-up quality away, by a country mile.
Despite the "stick-in-the-mud" AV-fans' criticisms, the only changes/mods I've
found desirable to make on the Japanese models is to swap out the pickups for
Seymour Duncan Vintage R/I's (which are an improvement over the Fender AV
pickups also!), and to install the "buzz-stop" on the tailpiece to increase
string down-force on the bridge, (a mod that the AV badly needs also, BTW).
I've recently seen Near Mint Japanese Jags and Jazzmasters sell at $350-$500 on
ebay, and when you add the $150 total cost of the Seymour Pickups and
"Buzz-Stop" you're still in the guitar hundreds less than the
inconsistent-quality (by your own description) AV versions.
One of the best iterations of the Jazzmaster EVER put on the market, was the
Japanese-made Ventures commemorative built for just one year (1996-97) and per
Fender's own records, only about 500 Jazzmasters were produced, of which only
about 157 made it into the U.S. These were made, according to Fender, with US
hardware, and Seymour Duncan Vintage R/I Jazzmaster pickups. Better yet, the
bodies are solid light swamp-ash, making this one of the lightest weight
Jazzmasters ever made, and with a resonance and quality of sound and tone that
makes playing it a totally blissful experience. When I got my Ventures
commemorative last year, the first time I brought it out at one of our band
rehearsals, the rest of the guys all commented that it was one of the sweetest
sounding Jazzmasters they'd ever heard PERIOD.
Right now, Music Ground, a UK vintage guitar dealer, has one of these listed on
ebay. They've just relisted it for the 5th or 6th time because there have been
ZERO bids at their "Buy It Now" price of 759 British Pounds, ($1,372.00 U.S.).
The item # is 7346525156, and the latest listing expires in 6 days.
This would seem the almost ideal situation in which to make them a substantially
lower offer than their asking price, because even they can't deny the total lack
of bidding activity at their asking price. You could email them an offer of
$1,000.00 US and see what their response is.
At $1,000 - $1,200 (IMHO) the Ventures commemorative Jazzmaster is the pinnacle
of all Jazzmasters made (except perhaps the $3,500 + Custom Shop models) since
the 1980's. The guitar's relative rarity would seem to promise considerable
price appreciation in the future as well, but most important, it is a unique,
gorgeous-looking, sweet-sounding, and smooth-playing axe. Check it out, if
you're more impressed by quality than by where the guitar was actually made.
