Re: [SurfGuitar101] recruiting non-surf musicians Are you kidding?????

John McCorvey (eddiekatcher) - 25 Aug 2005 21:30:03

Over the years we have TRIED to recruit and "TRAIN"
numerous guys to play surf/instro. Most just never
quite "get it" as Sticks always sez. We've put up
with drunken "rhythm" guitarists, Poser blues dudes,
drummers with double bass drum pedals and china
cymbals, or worse.....electronic drums....Damn, we've
seen it all.....it seems to me that a true interest
in and love for this stuff is what's really important.
I'm the perfect example.....a real average guitar
player who has listened to instro since the '60s and
always noodles out Mr. Moto or Ginchy every time he
picks up a guitar (Fender, of course). Always ask,
"What's in your CD collection?" It took us a whole
year to find Rich that's working with us now. He's
actually a MUCH younger guy, and what really surprises
me is that this young guy, right out of college is
REALLY a big fan of the music.......He must have a
surf music collection from hell...I think he'll do
just fine....Good luck and let us all know how you
make out with your quest....... Remember, never give
up.....best reverbs, eddie katcher

I totally agree, it's much more important having a member who really
digs the stuff than someone who just have prior experience in playing
it. Also, I find the "get it" factor especially important on stage
where it can't be disguised. As an example, one of the guys on the
pic below needed a haircut badly :-D
