Tuning an Octave Lower

kkamphaus - 23 Aug 2005 19:57:21

Hello everyone,
I was interested in everyone's thoughts on how I can get my
MexiStrat tuned down an octave. I have recently been trying to learn
some Duane Eddy songs and the tabs state that I need to tune my guitar
an octave lower but the strings don't seem to have enough tension. I
was wondering if I could just play the song on the lower end of the
strings with differnet fingering.
Any thoughts or ideas are appreciatted.

What gauge strings are you using?

I ended up getting a Jerry Jones longhorn Bass6 in order to be one octave lower.

9-gauge are kind of skinny and puny for Duane Eddy tunes...
You could try .013-.052s...those should give a nice beefy
twang...
or you could try a 7-string set of D'addario chromes...
they are tuned BEADGBE...you could lose the high E
string...
that'll get you close to the Baritone range.
(BEADGB )...you could attempt to de-tune those strings...
You could also try a set of Danelectro 6-string bass
strings or Danelectro Baritone strings...but your guitar
will likely not have the correct scale length for upper
register (above the 12th fret) playing...
but hey, who needs the upper register when you are playing
Duane Eddy, right?
Or you could find a Danelectro Bass6 on ebay...not the
least expensive solution though.
good luck,

Kevin, I REALLY don't think you need to tune an octave lower to play
Duane Eddy! That's just silly. The incredible thing about good ole
Duane is that his guitar only SOUNDED like it was tuned down an
octave - but in fact was tuned normally (unless he played a Danelectro
Baritone, which he did on occasion - but mostly his trusty Gretsch).
It's his amazing twangy tone which gave that illusion. And to achieve
that tone you gotta have a big old Gretsch hollowbody strung with
really fat strings (13-60 or something), and then play with the right
kind of touch. And let's not forget, a very clean amp with a 15"
speaker and a touch of reverb and tremolo.

9-gauge strings won't do for Duane. String your much heavier, tune to
normal (concert) pitch, put the Strat on the neck pickup, pick close
to the neck, and use the same fingering that's in the sheet music.
That would be my advice.
Good luck!
Ivan
