Hey, I read in a beach boys CD that surf historions say that moon
dawg, by the gamblers is considered the first surf album. Anybody out
there familiar with it? I need to find a copy of it.
That's quite a stretch to say the least. It was a single (no LP), and
is one of numerous precursors that were influntial and often covered,
but hardly a surf single. Not stylistically surf at all.
The Gamblers were also a studio project.
Derry Weaver - lead guitar and writer (now a carpenter in Canada)
Elliot Ingbar - rhythm guitar (pre-Captain Beefheart/Mothers, etc.)
Bruce Johnston - piano (pre-everything) and/or Leon Russell - piano
Larry Taylor - bass (pre-Canned Heat)
Rod Schaffer - drums
"Moon Dawg" c/w "LSD-25" (earliest acid-titled recording I think)
World Pacific 815
#14 first week of July, 1960 on KFWB
"Teen Machine" c/w "Tonky"
Last Chance 2 and Last Chance 108
"Moondawg" appears on numerous compilations. IMHO, one of the most
accurate covers is from Paul Revere and the Raiders' first LP on
Gardena titled "Like Long Hair."
I uploaded to the files section samples of "Moondawg" by the Gamblers
and Paul Revere and the Raiders, as well as the Gamblers "LSD-25." I'll
leave them there for a couple of days.

You can tell my garage band background, I loved the first version. You
can almost hear the garage door rattling,or the furnace (an octapuss
of course)making that weird noise they make when the band gets loud.
Los Cobras has got to play that song.
All three sounded surfy to me though. The first not so much ,but the
second two oh yea. Of course I am from the winter, water, wonderland.
