A day of firsts. A reverb tale

loscobrassurf - 21 Aug 2005 12:44:00

Sat august 20th was a day of firsts for Los Cobras. We played for
surfers at the 2nd anuall Great Lakes Surf Luau ,Sponsored by 3rd
coast surf shop.we played at the New Buffalo city beach.(surf music at
the beach who would of though of it) My Fender reverb box (nos tubes
and the mod)sounded great except that sucker made noises I never heard
before. They put us on an old trailer that was so wobbly every time the
drummer got going the tank got going. I tried moving the tank, put
bankets under the tank and finally just gave up.what do I do if that
happens again! Miller

As Lava Rats Bill would say...Hang it from an old person's walker!
(Basically, suspend it off the ground by hanging it on something portable).

Depending on room and length of cords just put it on the ground off
the trailer.

You can take the reverb pan out of the unit and drill a hole through
the stage and store it underneath like Neil Young does.
I am surprised nobody, to my knowledge, has ever made shockmount legs
or stand for a reverb unit. I am sure there is a product somewhere
that would work. Maybe not in the most extreme situations.

I wonder how well something like that works.

So he must have REALLY long RCA cords?

Wow, I used to work for a small tool and die precision machining
factory during Highschool. It was very close to SW Manufacturing,
and I think we may have done buisness with them. That's WIERD!
The only problem I'd see with the vibration pads would be that the
reverb tank itself wouldn't be heavy enough. I could be wrong, and
may be seeing this in my head wrong... But, if your on a rinky dink
trailer and it's bouncing around so will the pads. I think they may
work well in a situation in which the stage isn't moving, but your
bassist' Dual Showman keeps sending vibrations to the floor causing
the springs in your tank to shake.

JC Penny has a good solution.....a high density foam
rubber pillow. Works great if excessive back ground
spash was your problem....If your RI unit was picking
up an FM radio station.....replace it with an original
point to point unit......I intend to try one of the
after market point to point boards in my RI unit but
just haven't had the time..... eddie k

I'm trying to think of something simple I could carry with me all the
time. Maybe a couple bunge cords (hang it from a mike stand) or
another long cable (off the traylor) a pad would be too bulky for my
gig bag. Miiler

That sounds like a more convenient fix to the vibration problem, John. Have you
actually put it to the test?

Yep, I have also had some luck with folded up packing
blankets....although some of the instant up staging
that's used say at outdoor concerts is just
awful..I've seen Dick Dale suspend his tank on a rope
from the ceiling and the contrapcion someone mentioned
with the walker and bungees would probably work well
also. I always try to set my tank either right off
stage or right on the edge of the stage where the
plywood planking is anchored seems to work. I even
carry along a Holy Grail just in case. So far I
haven't had to use it as the pillow seems to absorb
most of the stage movement.....also it comes in handy
on the way home....ya make the drummer drive and you
snooze....hope Sticks doesn't catch wind of
this.....eddie k

Hey Miller, wheres New Buffalo? I live in Ontario Canada just north of Toronto.
I'm close to Lake Huron, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. I'd love to play at an
"official" surf gig like the Great Lakes Surf Luau someday. Not alot of surf
happenin in T.O.
Cheers

Okay folks,
So I dug through our site a little bit, and scraped up the picture of
my tank-hung-from-a-walker trick. It's great, lightweight, portable,
and I've seen them at garage sales or Goodwill shops for like $10
bucks. All you need is a walker and a medium-length bungee cord.
