Re: Summertime Blues

Klas Fjellgren (surfites_64) - 19 Aug 2005 13:05:33

I just spun the Ciro's version and it's great! In fact, it's so good
that I had to play it 3 times in a row! And no, I'm not kidding :-)
Great voice, awesome reverb drenched lead/rhythm guitar and I
actually think the dementia of the repeated verse adds to the
greatness of his version. Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't
noticed it before!
As for DD's high thoughts about himself, howabout this line from the
song "Surfing":
"Well, Beach Boys and Jan & Dean got nothing on me, because I'm Dick
Dale and you know I wail when I take my board to the sea" (or
something similar).
But maybe he's singing about surfing abilities and not singing
ditto :-D That said, I think DD had a great rock'n'roll voice (in the
50's and 60's that is...).
And I agree with Ivan (!) (we never agree on DD's vocals) that
someone should tell DD to stop singing in his current live shows (As
far as I'm concerned, someone should also tell him to stop playing...)

Klas, that's just nuts. I had no problem with our disagreements in
the past, but with this I've lost a bit of respect for you. ;)
I don't suppose you'll tell us next that you love his Blowin' In the
Wind?
And even on his best Gary-Usher-sixties vocals, he would often do
this high-frequency, girlish yelp that just sounds soooo bad.... It
makes me laugh every time I hear it...
> And I agree with Ivan (!) (we never agree on DD's vocals) that
> someone should tell DD to stop singing in his current live shows
Hey, well, that's something!
> (As far as I'm concerned, someone should also tell him to stop
playing...)
Nah, man, you haven't seen him lately. He sounds great, plays
great. I saw him this last May and the May before that, and he was
great. Except for the vocals - especially Fever! Yikes! (He does
do a good Louis Armstrong impression, though! Both on vocals and
trumpet.)
Here's a funny bit:
This is from the liner notes for "Tiger's Loose," clearly written by
Dick, though in third person:
"Feeling the same about Dick's sound and energy as he does, Mike
Carnavale and Rex Olson, two friends as well as talented engineers,
have sat down with him and spent countless hours creating his first
live recordedd album from his concert at the Golden Bear in
Huntington Beach, CA. Dick feels this time he will have complete
control over every decision to be made concerning his projection of
his energies and sound in his album, and this time it will be the
first album to capture his rough, raw, pulsating sound and energy
that moves his people at his concerts."
[Such bad grammar! Never mind the megalomania.... "HIS" people...]
Now, fast forward some 15 years, to 1997, and Rhino's "Better Shred
Than Dead" Dick anthology. In the liner notes, Dick says:
"I didn't like The Tiger's Loose; I couldn't get that fat sound.
My sound was ten times more powerful in person than on record."
LOL! Only his most recent album sounds like Dick does live - until
the next album, when magically the previous one suddenly turns into
crap. Gotta love that man!!

That's true Klas, there are more ways than one to listen to a tune. I'll have to
listen to Dick's "Summertime Blues" with dementia in mind. I'm surprised you
don't find Dick's new "low growl" vocals as demented. I like 'em as much as the
early vocals.

Haha Ivan, actually the only track from "Live at Ciro's" I've heard
is "Summertime Blues" (it's on one of the Surf label boots). I
recently bid on the Ciro's album on eBay but lost. BTW, what do you
think about the included instro track "Angry Generation"? (I think
Phil Dirt gave it 5 stars and going by his description it sounds that
it could be a great song).

That's one of the things I like in his voice. Makes me smile but
never laugh...

I saw him live last year and he (and the band) was even worse than
the two times I saw him in the 90's. Maybe I was unlucky catching bad
shows but I don't think so. After reading that he now includes "Smoke
On The Water" in his live set, he's totally dead for me.

Yeah LOL, I've never had any trouble with his attitude though! :-)

It's definitely not worth paying much for that album. I'd recommend
getting that Samurai Surf Guitar 2-CD set, since that has a bunch of
his other rare sixties tracks on the 1st CD, and the full Ciro's and
Tiger's Loose albums on the other CD. Definitely worth it! I think
it pops up on eBay relatively recently (in fact, I think it's just
some guy making the CDs by himself).

It's an excellent track. The best on the whole album, for sure.
Very dark. You can also get it on the Better Shred Than Dead 2-CD
Rhino anthology.

Smoke on the Water is pretty bad, I agree. But I thought there were
many other great moments during the shows. After actually walking
out of his shows in '97 and '00 (just couldn't take it anymore - and
in '00, the Cossacks played with him, so that's why I was there in
the first place), I grew to enjoy his live sets again. It took me
four years, though!

Marty, I'm glad you like his early vocals!
The reasons I don't like DD's current vocals are mainly two:
* Terrible choices of cover songs
* Horrible arrangements to above mentioned terrible covers
The reasons I don't like his current instros is a different story.

I'll have to listen to Dick's "Summertime Blues" with dementia in
mind. I'm surprised you don't find Dick's new "low growl" vocals as
demented. I like 'em as much as the early vocals.
