Marty Tippens' new Crate Power Pod

bruce duncan (wetreverb) - 19 Aug 2005 01:17:16

Hey Marty,
The reviews coming in on that new Crate ultra-compact, light-weight 150W amp
head, are overall, very positive, and I'm starting (gearhead that I am!) to
think about checking one out myself. Jensen's making a line of speakers that
use a neodymium magnet resulting in a 100W RMS speaker that weighs almost 20lbs
LESS than the EV12-L that I have a pair of in my Bandmaster 2X12 cab.
If I could get decent tonal quality with an amp that weighs less than my guitar,
and a speaker cab that just lost 38 lbs of weight, it would make a major
improvement in ease of transport to our gigs.
Now that you've had yours for a couple weeks, and the "new" is starting to wear
off slightly, I'm interested to hear your continuing reactions/impressions with
this amp because with the power/weight equation being what it is, at 200 clams
we're talking Mega-Value here! So, any further word on that new Crate?
Regards,
Bruce D

Woolsey used the Crate Power Block exclusively for three Detonators gigs at the
Zoo this last weekend. He says it was great and he left the Showman in the car.
I haven't used mine since the first trial, I keep it as back up.
Yes, I really like the idear of those new light weight Jensens.

Now that's interesting, Marty!
Rob Woolsey has always been very serious about his "sound" and I thought he'd
pretty much want to stick to vintage Fender tube amps. That new Crate must be
purdy darned sweet or I'm sure he wouldn't have liked it enough to use it at a
gig! I take his approval as an indication that Crate musta gotten a lot of
things right with the Power Pod amp.

will someone please try one of these light weight Jensens and give us a
report?
so far I've found no substitute for big magnets, big voice coils and
big transformers (and four power tubes)...and to follow up on an
earlier thread, the built in reverb in my Dual Professional works great
for me

Huh? OLD MEN :-)
Anytime I'm at one of your gigs, and you need help with
your HEAVY Equipment, let me know, I'll lug any heavy
Fender Amp/Cab to any stage. Just to hear it be played right.
I'll even carry the Reveb tank( even though it's light) but you
gotta promise to crank it up on a few Tunes.

Ok Jeffery! I'm gonna take you up on that! You carry my Twin and I'll turn you
on to a Detonator tee-shirt. I promise to crank the reverb up to at least 10.

P.S. Where are the Insects playin' tomorrow night. Those knuckle-stooges must of

It is very definitely an old man thing, Jeff. I still use tube amps prmarily
(and tank reverb). The Crate head is just a viable spare so ya don't have to
bring a second tube amp.

Since I kinda started this latest thread, I have to add my 2-cents' worth. Lest
true aficionados become unduly alarmed, neither Marty Tippens nor Rob Woolsey
would waste ten seconds with one of these new Crate Power Pods if they sounded
even slightly inferior to a pristine vintage Fender tube amp. Anyone who's ever
had the pleasure of seeing The Detonators in a live peformance can testify, when
it comes to playing and sounding period-authentic, Rob Woolsey has precious few
serious rivals. Yet, according to Marty, at the Detonators L.A. Zoo gig last
weekend, both days Rob used his new Crate Power Pod from 12 Noon to 3 PM, and
left his vintage Showman head in his car! I want to make sure the point gets
across - when it comes to the quality of sound he makes with his guitar, Rob is
one of the hardest-to-please players I've ever met.
When a surf music fan says he wants to hear the music "be played right." it's
my feeling that the most important thing in Surf Music is "The Sound", not the
specific items of gear in the guitarists' rigs, but the authenticity of "The
Sound" they are able to produce with those rigs.
It's interesting that a number of prominent Surf Guitarists use alternative
guitars and amps to the "conventional wisdom" that says it can't be good if you
aren't playing a vintage Jaguar or Jazzmaster through a BlackFace Fender Showman
or Twin Reverb.
For instance, The Nebulas' lead guitarist shreds a pure and true Surf tone
playing a Ventures Mosrite, NOT a Fender. Ivan Pongracic of The Space Cossacks,
and now, The Madeira has stated numerous times how much he loves the Vox AC-30
(which was the signature amp of the British Invasion!)
Technology, especially solid-state technology has come a long way since the
1960's, when the first solid state guitar amps were introduced. Audio deisgn
engineers have been pursuing the "Holy Grail" of being able to produce a solid
state amplifier that will offer a sonic experience that even the more discerning
ear will find equivalent to that of a vacuum-tube-powered amp.
Most solid state amps produced even in recent years, have failed to seriously
rival the tonal characteristics of decent tube amps, but some have sored higher
marks than others. Crate, for instance has been producing very modestly priced
solid state amps since the 1970's, and during the 80's and 90's some of their
models came closer in sound to the traditional tube amp, than ever before.
This Crate Power Pod is an exciting new product, because, at least from the
early feedback from musicians, it offers a combination of high power and
excellent tube-like tonality in a package the size of a small video-cam, and
weighing about 5 pounds! As cool as those vintage Showmen and Twin Reverbs are,
the Showman head weighs about ten times the Crate Power Pod. And, Crate
delivers this package for $200.00!!!
In the Surf Music community there was far from unanimous acceptance of the
Fender Reverb Unit when Leo Fender first introduced it back in '62. Dick Dale
embraced the new technology and used the Reverb Unit to create the splashing wet
sounds that have become near and dear to the hearts of Surf Music fans
everywhere. However, Paul Johnson of The Bel Airs felt so strongly opposed to
the use of drenched wet reverb, his arguments over this with Eddie Bertrand, led
to the breakup of one of the greatest First Gen Surf Bands! Time and near
universal acceptance of the Reverb Unit by Surf musicians and Surf fans, have
proven how wrong and how short-sighted Paul Johnson was in 1963!
I'm trusting Marty and Rob, both Surf musicians for whom I have tremendous
respect, to not be on the wrong side of this latest technological development
for musicians. I went down to Guitar Center earlier today, and plunked down MY
$200 for one of these Power Pods. Will I use it at a gig any time soon? Maybe.
A lot depends on how I like its sound compared to my Fender amps, and I won't be
able to form a definite opinion on this until I've woodshedded with this new
amp, and done the good ol' A-B test. I played on it for about 15 minutes this
evening, and was well impressed with how it performed and sounded. Putting my
Fender Reverb Unit into it, and playing muted lower strings, the Astronauts'
style splash was definitely there!
If I like the Power Pod's sound and tonality, at least equally to my Fender Twin
Reverb, after using it for the next couple of weeks, yes, it will become my rig
for our live gigs, but ONLY if it satisfies MY ears at least as well as the
Fender has done these last several years. As someone who was around, and
listening to the First Gen surf bands back when their records were played on the
radio, and their singles would hit the Top 40, I think I have a purdy darn good
idea of how proper Surf Music oughta sound. I'm not about to compromise the
sound that our band has become noted for, just to save carrying 150-200 lbs of
amp and speakers to our gigs. But, if I am 100% certain that I can drop 80-120
lbs. of weight from my rig, while still producing an equivalent quality of
Sound, you can bet I'll do it.
Regards, aand Happy Reverb, always,

It is very definitely an old man thing, Jeff. I still use tube amps prmarily
(and tank reverb). The Crate head is just a viable spare so ya don't have to
bring a second tube amp.

Huh? OLD MEN :-)
Anytime I'm at one of your gigs, and you need help with
your HEAVY Equipment, let me know, I'll lug any heavy
Fender Amp/Cab to any stage. Just to hear it be played right.
I'll even carry the Reveb tank( even though it's light) but you
gotta promise to crank it up on a few Tunes.

(gearhead that I am!) to think about checking one out myself.
Jensen's making a line of speakers that use a neodymium magnet
resulting in a 100W RMS speaker that weighs almost 20lbs LESS than
the EV12-L that I have a pair of in my Bandmaster 2X12 cab.

starting to wear off slightly, I'm interested to hear your continuing
reactions/impressions with this amp because with the power/weight
equation being what it is, at 200 clams we're talking Mega-Value
here! So, any further word on that new Crate?
