Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Sometimes we forget.........

John McCorvey (eddiekatcher) - 18 Aug 2005 22:12:47

I know all about this battering around of whether or
not Miserlou should be taken seriously....but pause
for a moment and remember that a LOT of our most
cherished vintage surf music momemnts were recorded by
young kids who were not particuarly proficient on
their respective instruments....it's that raw
undeveloped edge that gave this music we all love, its
push into history. Those initial offerings have
allowed us to continue to tune and refine it to the
dizzying heights that some of you guys have taken it
to. Sure, I listen to Dave W and Ivan and others and
I'm continually blown away at what amazing music these
guys can make, but I never fail to give thanks to the
pioneers of surf who gave us this gift. Those seeds
were well planted......and thanks Dave and Ivan, you
guys are BOSS! greatful Eddie Katcher.

I agree almost completely with Eddie! I LOVE all the old stuff,
even when it's rough and not terribly technically accomplished.
It's got soul and honesty, and that's what I require to dig it
(well, a cool melody and arrangement, too!). And though I approach
things in an seemingly more technical manner, well, I'm just trying
to come up with music worthy of my heroes, and this is the best that
I can do! I'm not consciously trying to be more technical
or 'refine' surf music or surf guitar technique.
And for the record, I really dig many of the Beach Boys' instros,
especially their version of Moon Dawg, which was the first surf song
I ever learned, back in '87 or so, LONG before I thought I would
ever be playing in a surf band! (though even then I remember
occasionally fantasizing about it...) That's still my favorite
version of that oft-covered tune...
Ivan
PS I must take one exception to Eddie's post, though: I greatly
appreciate his lumping me in with Dave as the most accomplished
players in modern surf music. But man, I can't tie Dave's shoes.
And there are SO many incredible players out there in the surf
circles, much better than me. Our little pond is chock-full of
talent!! I've been really impressed recently by the guitar playing
on the new Kilaueas CD as well as the Japanese band the Sellcancers -
excellent guitarists, doing stuff there's no way I'd ever come up
with. In fact, DD, Rich Fifield, Eddie Bertrand, Jim Messina, Jim
Skiathitis and Theo Penglis (what a monster player!), many more,
these guys were technically REALLY accomplished! Again, I feel I'm
just trying to live up the standards set by my heroes, that's all.
And every time I hear them again, I feel that I'm falling QUITE
short! Anyway, the point being there's always been oodles of fancy
technique in surf music, but it's NOT a requirement for good surf
music - though always a nice spice. Thank God this is an art form
rather than competition, that's all that I can say!

I liked the assessment as well. Nice addition, Ivan.
That is precisely why I had chosen to differentiate
between best and favorite.
