This is very interesting Dano..thanks. I agree with her on this topic. I've
never been a big fan of Joan Jett...she seems to make too many covers (I
Love Rock & Roll, Crimson & Clover, and even an AC/DC song). However I
admire her for slugging it out for so long. She does rock and she has worked
hard.
Which leads to the question...why so few women in surf? Is it just because
there aren't a lot of surf musicians anyway? Off the top of my head:
Kathy Marshall (Queen of the Surf Guitar from the 60's - no recordings exist
of her although she supposedly has an acetate or two)
Lada from The Bambi Molesters
Catherine from The Space Cossacks
The Neptunas
Susan & The Surftones
Female keyboard player in The Omega Men (somewhat surfy...?)
and.........?
Hmmm...are there any other first wave examples besides Ms. Marshall?
Was Kathy Marshall a novelty act or could she play? There is a chapter about
her in Bob Dalley's _Surfin'_Guitars_ book and he implies she could hold her
own with Dick Dale and Eddie Bertrand. Too bad she never recorded anything.
Someone should try to find her and interview her.
Any opinions on Susan & The Surftones? I've been meaning to check them out.
BN
maybe not all strictly surf by any sytandard, but nevertheless,
la fellina negra, from the tijuana bibles,
maya from gein and the graverobbers,
the balboas have a female bassplayer
and the magnetic IV have a female uhhh, singer (hm, not used on the surf
tunes they play, obviously.)
oh.... and my own non-macho sufr-rock-o-rama band the mono-tones have a
'Laura' on guitar!
