Miserlou-Best Version?

hbseacliff - 15 Aug 2005 11:35:54

Im curious to everyones take on the best version of Miserlou? I saw
Stacktome play it recently. Kicked ass, amazing energy.
Also saw Tom Stanton of the Surf Kings giver a very strong performance
recently in HB.
My favorite version is Bobby Fuller. His version was recorded live at
a bowling alley of all places in El Paso Texas between 1962 & 1964. It
can be heard on "Bobby Fuller, El Paso Rock, vol 2 more early
recordings." Raw, innovative, amazing. Check it out. The good ones all
seem to die so young.

Hard to say - besides maybe "Pipeline," "Apache," or "Walk Don't
Run," "Misrlou" has to be up there as far as one of the most covered
surf songs out there. Personally - I think the Surf Coasters' and
Slacktone's versions just rip as far as energy goes. The Trashmen's
version is great, too. There's another version on a Japanese comp
called "Let's go Surfin" by a band who's name escapes me that's
really good too. I'll always be partial to Dick's "original"
rendition, though.

Here's another vote for the Bobby Fuller 4 version, and a vote for
them being the most underated band of that time. I've always thought
of Bobby as the last link to good old American Rock and Roll.
Althought he had a voice of his own, you can't help but think Eddie
Cochran, and Buddy Holly would have probably done similar things to
what Bobby was doing in the '60s. I've heard Bobby loved surf guitar
and his rhythm guitarist hated it.

Because of the huge number of covers, I tend to be more interested in
very original arrangements, impossibly precise playing, or utterly
intense energy. With that in mind, and in no particular order:
Slacktone (the version on Gnarly Reef RIPS insanely!)
Tiki Tiki Bamboooos
The Surf Coasters
Agent Orange
Buck-O-Nine
Gallon Drunk
The Space Agency
The Spiedels
Lots of very competent versions, among which I very much like:
Dead Men Don't Surf
The Surfaris
The Roemans
Drew Weaver and the Alvarados (vocal)
And of course, the Dick Dale and his Del-tones single.

I'm an old time purist: so I'll go with Dick Dale & the
Deltones "Miserlou Twist" (Surfer's Choice LP)...I dig all
those crazy strings and the drumming is outstanding.

Phil:
I totally forgot about Agent Orange's version...that
distorted Vox sounded buzzsaw fantastic...man, back in the
80's, that version of Miserlou absolutely inspired my
proto-surf-reverb-punker-mind...I think it totally blew my
mind into 1000000 pieces all over the Orange County
pavement on the corner of Beach Blvd and Brookhurst.
I think I wore out my "Bitchen' Summer" vinyl EP playing
"Miserou" like 100 times a day back then. My poor
parents...

DP -
Have you seen the movie "A Swingin' Affair? I think it's from
about 'late '62, '63. D.D. does this version (Miserlou Twist)without
the strings, if I remeber correctly. It starts with a spotlight on
just his guitar, then explodes into the whole band. I only saw the
clip once, but it was VERY COOL!
Anybody know where to get a copy of it? I've searched the web,
and can't find one.

It's been around the lists many times already - google will get you all
that yu need to know. It was written ages ago, a "Greek/Mediterranean"
pop song and later "folk" dance, first committed to rock format years
before Dick Dale and his Del-tones by several, but none as firehose
intense before that magical day in 1962 when I first heard DD's on
KFWB.

Phil,
When you mention the Surf Coasters as doing your favorite version of
Misirlou do you mean their standard electric version or their acoustic
version?

That is why I am biased towards their version of Apache. I don't have
a recorded version anywhere but I was standing about a foot away from
him. I am biased towards their version of Baja as well. When they
played here in Seattle they played Pipeline, Walk Don't Run, Apache,
Baja, and Misirlou. Ferenc told me the next night they thought Seattle
was a big surf town because of the Ventures.

Absolutely Phil!! I can't wait until The Surf Coasters come back around. Those
dudes are phenomenal!!
Now if you really want to blow some minds, let's get Wronski and Shigeo together
and do their live version of "Miserlou" together on the same
stage...............
I'm not sure if the world is ready.................

Yeah, The Spiedels! (I assume your talking about their "Waikiki Surf

dig the machine-gun, palm-muted (!), odd rhythmic double-picking
teenage mayhem of the lead guitar!! And the 10,000 in the crowd going

Yes! They were the most intense and exciting of all the bands there (at
least as represented by the recordings. Milton Soong (guitar) used to
live in San Jose some 15 years ago. I lost track of him. Milton said
they did not record.
