Fender amp, built-in Fender reverb?

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 14 Aug 2005 20:16:42

Fender built, or still builds, an amp with a full-blown '60s reverb unit with
tone, dwell, and
mix controls right inside the cabinet. Can anyone tell me what amp that is?
Further, has
anyone actually evaluated how well the Fender tube reverb circuit functioned in
an amp? I
would think it would be really prone to vibration noise.
Just curious....

I've had experience with both the Vibro King and the
Dual Professional. And while they do have a "3-knob"
reverb built on the front end, neither of them were
any match for any of my stand alone reverbs....I spent
a fair amount of time mulling through the enclosed
schematics that came witht the Dual Professional and I
could never figure how Fender could call that circuit
a true reverb tank circuit. They both sounded pretty
good until you plugged in the real thing and
bang.....real reverb!!!!!I'll say one thing for that
Dual Professional Amp, It was the loudest Fender amp
I've ever had, and I have some really hot/tweaked
Dual Showman Reverb heads....I put the DP chassis in a
Showman head type cab and used it to power a Dual
Showman bottom with 2 EV-15L's. That was one awesome
combination. However, the Dual Pro Amp was somewhat
sterile and didn't push back and sing the way most
great Fender amps do when they are really
cooking....But it was LOUD, and it was CLEAN!.....The
reverb though, just didn't quite cut it.....Eddie K

Shigeo of The Surf Coasters uses a VibroKing (not on the US tour, but
in Japan) that has a built in reverb tank. You could listen to some of
their stuff and see if you like it. It's custom shop and used you're
lucky to get them for $1000, even for a '94. Hope that helps some.

Hmmm, well, I must say that my own experience with my Dual
Professional is very different from Eddie's. I bought mine some
eight or nine months ago (used on eBay - it's a '96) and it's been
my primary gigging and recording amp since then. I think the
speakers and tubes are such a big component of the sound of any
amps, and maybe this is why I like it so much while Eddie didn't
care for it much. The stock Celestion Vintage 30s in that amp broke
up very easilly and when you turned the amp up past 7, it started
sounding like Jimmy Page. I replaced the Celestions with Weber's
copies of JBL D120Fs, together with the aluminum dust cap. Since
then the amp has been sounding incredible, as good as any Fender amp
I've ever played. It is a bit cleaner than a Showman, but since
when is this a problem for surf music?
As far as the reverb, my main reverb unit for the last ten years has
been a blonde reissue with the cap mod and NOS tubes. I connected
it to the Dual Pro and then I switched between the onboard reverb
and the reverb box - I could tell no difference. My own impression
has been that Fender did a fantastic job with the onboard reverb
unit for the Dual Pro (though it uses different tubes - a 6V6 and a
two 12AX7s, rather than 6K6, 12AT7 and 12AX7), and I've played
several gigs with that amp using the onboard reverb with very
satisfying results. I also recorded with it as my primary amp two
weeks ago with equally satisfying results. I wonder if the tubes
used make a big difference for the reverb? (I swapped mine out with
the JJ tubes, which I highly recommend.) Also, it is possible there
is a fair amount of variation between the Dual Pro's reverb units
and I just lucked out.

Nothing wrong with my inboard either, it's just a preference thing with me. The
o/b
sounds a little better through the loop, but I'll use the i/b anytime in a
pinch.
Yeah, I've never been crazy about the v30's either and have been jonesing for
some Weber
Cali's for some time. I gotta say I've never taken them to the 7 level though, I
actually
kinda like the slight breakup they get at around 4 or 5. Do the Webers have any
break-up
at all?

I have actually been playing the amp with the volume between 8 and
10! (Fat switch off - it's just a volume boost.) I do like it loud!

None that I can tell. Clean as a whistle! But what a fat sound...
I got the alnico Cali speakers - not cheap, but what a sound.
Weber VST is based in Kokomo, IN, about 30 minutes from where my
parents live. So, I've bought quite a few speakers from them
through the last five years. They make really great stuff, and i
see that even Fender is starting to use them (for the new '58
reissue Twin, for example). And very, very nice people to boot. I
always just stop by there and pick up the speakers.

Hey Ivan, it doesn't matter what amp YOU play....It
will sound AWESOME!!!!!You are the man and your DP
rocks......In Indianapolis and in Chicago you took no
prisoners.......I never could become one with mine
though as it always seemed to be fighting me.....It
was LOUD and it was HEAVY....but it was solid.....I
tried all sorts of speaker combos in it, D-131F's,
D-120's, K-120's and even E-120's. But I never felt
as comfortable with it as I do with the '68 Dual
Showman Reverb head I've had around for years.....It
just sings and feels like an old friend....I recently
repackaged one of my '68 Dual Showman Reverb heads
into a Twin Reverb cab with brand new Fender Twin
Reverb speakers and it, quite frankly, is a real
suprise.....boy, does it sound good on tape. And set
up about 1 foot off the ground on a milk crate, has
great focus.....Still a bit heavy for tired old eddie
k though...anybody out there tried the new super light
weight neodymium speakers? They are supposed to be
really efficient.....Can't wait for the new Maderia CD
and pass along my greetings to the guys, best
reverbs (built-in or add on) eddie k
