Gear Question - Headphones . . .

Dick Messick (flatwound01) - 01 Dec 2002 08:37:59

Hi all!
Here's another gear related question for those of you who have
headphone jacks for their amps . . . what kind of headphones do you
use? I'd like to get some late night practice in, but can't really
do it without the 'phones. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hey Dick,
I've been researching some headphones for a few days as well. One of the
things that bugs me about headphones is the cabling, so I have been looking
into wireless headphone solutions.
Check out Sennheiser's RS series of wireless headphones. They have about
7 models. It actually appears as though they're offering the different
models for those on a budget (a first for Sennheiser) and those who aren't.
Personally, I'm eyeballing the top of the line model only because if it's
my surf or my own amp I'm hearing, there's no way I'm compromising sound
quality, and I've been getting into a lot more sound design and editing on
my iMac I picked up last summer. Those sessions typically run WAY into the
hours after my housemates have gone to bed, hence the sudden need and desire
for headphones.

I recently bought a pair of Bose headphones and have
been really happy with them. They have excellent bass
to them, provide a very rich sound and even look kind
of cool. They run around 150 bucks, but have made me
awfully happy.

I'll toss in my 2 cents with headphone stuff.
Before spending big bucks, check out the Grado SR60s for $70. These
are easy to drive and long time audiophile favorite. The Grado SR225s
add some low bass and detail. For ultimate isolation and killer sound
quality, I love the Etomytic research SR4s. Check out the Headroom
company at headphone.com for more than you ever wanted to know about
phones.
I recently bought the Korg pandora PX4 to use as a headphone amp.
It is a lot of fun. I has just OK amp models and effects (including
spring reverb). It does have a built in rythem machine with 2 surf
beats! Another cool feature that I have not used, is the wireless
headphone transmitter (infra red type).
best
Dan

Here is a web site with pretty interesting Forums that will give you
everything you want to know about headphones (and then some)
