Rhythm Guitar WAS besides Am,Dm,Em,Fm what chords are used in surf music?

John Brownlow (pinkheadedbug) - 12 Aug 2005 22:32:13

It does raise an interesting question... do you really need a rhythm
gtr in surf? I've shied away from playing as a 3-piece because I'm
not sure I'm really capable of filling out the sound on my own... I
played for a couple of years in a 3-piece pop/thrash outfit and
always felt the lack of someone else. The great thing about 2 guitars
is that you can swap leads and play harmonies... Slacktone and other
bands are very convincing counter-examples but they do have geniuses
on guitar and other instruments... what about mere mortals?

It would be interesting to hear Slacktone with a rhythm guitar player, not that
they need one.........

Casey Cash (surfgitar) - 15 Aug 2005 03:01:56

The synergy that results from two simple guitar parts played together
well is one of my favorite aspects of surf music. You don't have to be
a virtuoso; in fact maybe its better sometimes if you are not - just
keep it clean and simple. An example might be "Perfida". Played alone,
the melody and rhythym parts sound OK - together they sound great! Its
impossible to come close to that with just one guitar, even with a
bass. Too bad that playing rhythym guitar is becoming somewhat of a
lost art, IMO.

Frank Delucca (pipelinefrank) - 15 Aug 2005 04:08:33

One of the best examples of two-guitar synergy is the original Mr. Moto by Paul
Johnson and Eddie Bertrand of The Bel Airs. Surf music was built around the
rhythm section and a special sound that included Muted Reverbed bottom strings
driving the song while bands like The Astronauts added a 2nd rhythm guitar
playing the full chords through a vibrato effect. There weren't any notable
3-piece surf bands in the 60's, and the ones that could, had either a 3rd
guitarist, or Sax, or keyboard, or sometimes all the above!
