These days the main object in surf music is to stay
away from ANY clichés.
Thanks in advance,
KK

I know I am gonna get slammed for this but...
Some (helpful?) advice: start by learning some of the "canons" of
early surf music: Pipeline, Mr. Moto, Misirlou, Wipeout, etc. Learn
the techniques, i.e. half-step bends, tremelo bar bends, and work your
slides and hammer-ons. Then do as Dick Dale advised, and try and
capture the sound and the feeling of surfing and the surf. It ain't
rocket science.
You might try taking some of the songs you already know and trying to
give them a surfy-feel. If there's one crucial chord, it's the Em,
IMHO. Most of the early surf bands used pretty simple open major
chords, with some minor and 7th cords thrown in...but there really
aren't any rules.
Oh, and become obsessive about your gear, like the rest of the people
on this website. ;-) Junk anything that doesn't say "Fender" and was
made in the last 30 years. And be sure everything has tubes,
especially your vintage amp and reverb device.
Good luck!
Gavin

types of music. So check out some mideastern scales, and spanish scales and
rhythms.
