Here is something I am really curious about.
You: "I am in a surf band"
John/Jane Doe: "Oh. You mean like ___?"
Here in Seattle it has to be the Ventures. We get a fair share of
Beach Boys as well. The younger crowd knows Man or Astro-Man? Nobody
knows who Dick Dale is but they all know Misirlou. It is either the
Pulp Fiction song and more often then not the Pizza Hut or Dominos song.

Here's how it ended for me recently....
me: We only play instumental surf.....
Them: do you sing?
me: no, it's all instrumental, you know like 'wipeout'
Them: OH, oldies! Do you do any Billy Joel?
me: no....
Them: Elton John?
me: No....
Them: You must run out of songs pretty fast....

I have to mention the instrumental part a lot.

The one that stands out in my memory is from the City of Orange Street Fair in
September 2003. Longboard Ranch was there to play three 45-minute sets, had
gotten about halfway through the first set when these two young (Think Bill &
Ted, or maybe Spicoli) slightly intoxicated dudes appoached the stage, to
compliment our playing, and then in the next breath asked, "Do you guys play
any Skynyrd?"
