The trick to making cables last is to use care when winding them back
up. If you just start looping it up around your hand and elbow, you
end up twisting the wire inside and breaking the connections.
The trick is to first disconnect the thing on both ends, then
carefully wind it, letting it spin out the way the wire naturally
tends to want to go.
I've been using the same cheapo cables for years now.
