New Stuff? The Kilaeuas & Krontjong Devils

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 09 Aug 2005 18:52:11

I see that Double Crown has some new stuff. Anyone heard the new
Kilaeuas or "The Krontjong Devils - Surfin' Sounds Of The Krontjong
Devils" CD's?
I have the Mundaka Calls CD, and while I haven't listened to it in a
long time, I seem to recall it being pretty good. It had an
Atlantics/Bambi Molesters type of vibe to it.
I've heard several Krontjong Devils tunes on various comps; some of
them are very very good and some are so-so.
Thanks,
BN

I personally am a big fan of The Krontjong Devils but
finding their stuff has been a little difficult. I've
got an LP called "On Tour" and there are three tracks
on the "War of The Surf Guitars" comp put out jointly
by Double Crown and Golly Gee. They're a band I
wanted more of but didn't get, so I'm definitely
checking out DC's site for that disc.

It looks like the Krontjong Devil's "Surfin Sounds Of" CD is not new
and is all covers; there is a review on Reverb Central.

It came out in '96. It's an excellent cd. They do some more obscure
covers than the norm

Life is short. Play for the music. Wear your heart on your sleeve.
So I wouldn't get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to
keep me in constant touch with my limitations

I got this CD recently, and I probably shouldn't be saying anything
about it yet, cause I've only listened to it twice or three times in a
very noisy car with windows down. But I'll give my initial
impressions based on those (poor-quality) listens: this CD really
cooks! It sounds like a totally different band than the last Kilaueas
CD (or at least that was my impression). Much more trad surf with a
lot more reverb, and excellent lead guitar playing. The comparisons
with the Atlantics and the Bambi Molesters are not there any more,
either. They have much more of their own sound now, while also
becoming more traditional. I'm really looking forward to giving it
some closer listens. I'd say this is a definite buy.

I have both of their CDs plus some other stuff. I like On Tour more
than Surfin' Sounds. On Tour has some really cool originals, and it
sounds better (or I should say cleaner) than Surfin' Sounds (which is
much more lo-fi - a bit too much for my taste). But it's been a while
since I've listened to either. I'd say it's worth getting, but don't
expect to be blown away.

KD's "Surfin' Sounds Of" is definetly way better than "On Tour
With"
Get it.
I was wondering about the new Kilaeuas myself.

I agree with Ivan about the new Kilaueas record. It seem that they
are gettin better and better with each release ! Live they are a
killer too...I mean a band with a volcano (its their fog machine) on
stage is too cool. The vinyl version of "Prof. Vulkanowa.." comes in
volcanic coloured vinyl and is limited, so vinylo hunters and
collectors are satisfied too.
Their first record "Magmanautic Inferno" [split cd
with "Surfpatrouille"/ 10 inch as vinylversion] is also hot, it`s
rougher than the other two records and has a great "original" dirty
60ts sound. Anyway, The Kilaueas rule !

The Kilaueas are definitely defining their own sound with their new
release. We have a few copies of their new CD in stock at
www.dblcrown.com (and 100's of copies of Mundaka Calls, which we
released). Their new CD will have full US distribution shortly from
their German label, All Score Media. At that time you will be able to
get copies from your local shops, Amazon and online specialists like
Zptduda.com. I will be over in Germany this fall/winter and with luck,
will be able to see The Kilaueas play live for the first time. I'll do
a full report on my trip, and any surf related shows I see, in the
early 2006 issue of The Continental. I will have my Ipod with me as
well, so perhaps I can even record an interview for download from
www.dblcrown.com.

No, The Kilaueas are activ on stage since years. I`ve seen them
several times and these guys rocked every venue. The Kilaueas are a
killer live combo with a powerfull sound, lots of stage action and
their volcano fogmachine. Here is a link to surfkraft.de with
some Kilaueas action shots (including the volcano fogmachine)

--Whoops, I guess the way I wrote that could be understood that way! The
band actually plays quite a few shows throughout Europe, it would just be
the first time for <<me>> to see them play live!
