Madeira's Intruder

Rob Campbell (robmantid) - 08 Aug 2005 17:31:43

I'd love to know how the tone in the intro to Madeira's Intruder was
set up. It almost sounds like one of these:
but I am guessing it was just a little guitar voodoo. If its not a
secret, care to elaborate?
Thanks

cool pic .. that's the one that Phantom Frank of the Pahntom Four
plays - it's on the 'live at the diepte' cd and he uses it live.
Our drummer has a very tongue in cheeck 'guitar sound effects' book,
and it says you can mimmick a sitar by bending a paperclip in a large
L-form, sticking it into your bridge somehow, and have on leg of the
paperclip dangling against your strings close to the bridge. add
reverb, play with drone high e, and there you go.
I tried it and it *sort of* sounds sitar-ish, hahaha. cool trick for
free tho.

Hello Rob. It's not a secret, and there isn't much to it. It most
certainly wasn't a sitar (though it's funny you bring it up, since
last week listening to some new tracks we recorded my wife said on
several occasions that my guitar sounds like a sitar!). I played
my '62 reissue Strat on the neck pickup and volume turned down a bit
into a heavily-reverbed reissue Vox AC30. I think it might sound like
a sitar to you due to the ringing, droning high-E string that I'm
constantly playing along with the other notes.
Hope that helps.

Ivan,
Will a studio version of "Intruder" be included on the
new CD?

Hello Ferenc!
first of all, major kudos on the GP coup! How awesome. (My review
of the most recent PDM CD coming, if I could just get a bit of
peace... Things have been a bit nuts.)
Second, to answer your question, though we fully intended to include
Intruder on our debut CD, it appears now that it isn't going to
happen. We recorded all the tracks for the CD slightly over a week
ago, and Intruder was among them, but we ended up with 57 minutes of
music, which is clearly too much. Nothing is completely decided
yet, but it looks at though a few months after the release of the
full-length CD we may be releasing a limited edition CD-EP with only
the covers, including Intruder.... Stay tuned...
Ivan
PS We also recorded the intro, labeled by the Surf Coasters
as "Intruder 1", and we did it as they did - with acoustic
instruments...
