Re: [SurfGuitar101] Shameless Self-Promotion/ghoulstock

twangbangin - 05 Aug 2005 19:44:44

I sent a friend of mine who was visiting NYC down to check out
Ghoulstock, which promised to be a kick-ass show. Unfortunately, it was
the show that never was. I'm sure there's some lessons to be learned
here along the lines of don't take anything for granted. Here's the
description from the Nebulas webpage:
July 31st, 2005: Ghoulstock. The show that never was. Stillborn. So
here's the story from my end:
OK, so we load all of our stuff up in our trailer, get it hooked up
to the ride, and off we strike for New Jersey. Spend the morning
driving down, BS'ing, whatever...So after five and a half hours of
driving, the GPS has us within .3 of a mile from the venue, so we're
all looking out the window to find it. "There it is!" someone says, and
as we see the "HARWAN" sign above the marquee of the theater, our eyes
drop to see a kid with a long pole putting the second "L" up in the
word "CANCELLED".
We pull right up to the theater to see about 100 people outside
milling around, most looking pissed off, and a slew of police cars and
fire vehicles all labeled with "Mt. Ephraim" logos. I jump out and walk
in the front doors and run into someone who looks like he might have
something to do with the show. At this point I start meeting all the
peeps behind the construction of Ghoulstock and learn that 20 minutes
before the show was to start, even after HAVING BEEN GIVEN THE GREEN
LIGHT by the fire marshall just two days before, they decided to re-pay
a visit to say that the building was improperly equipped with the
appropriate sprinkler system and there would be no Ghoulstock.
"Get out." was what I was told -verbatim- by some jackass donut-eater
on the Mt. Ephraim Morale Suppression Force.
I was told later by one of the event organizers that in years past the
owner of the Harwan had somehow screwed over the neighboring
businesses, and now they had a grudge to hold and would do anything
they could to see to the subsequent failure of The Harwan. Politics can
be an MF'er.
So from there everyone tried to organize another party elsewhere so
that we could all demonstrate for each other the fruits of our labor,
which was to be had at some kids house a few blocks away. This would
prove to be interesting, and I think the most valuable lesson learned
of this day was by the young man who opened his mouth and said that
they could move it to his house, as when we got there, he nervously
approached us and said we could only have a couple of songs as his mom
would be home around 9, and if I knew how many people were coming.
I thanked him for the generous offer but declined and told him that he
wasn't to worry, we wouldn't bother. From there we started making
penny-bets on how many minutes it would be until the police made their
encore appearance to shut THIS down as well. The fine organizers of
Ghoulstock began showing up and with that we thanked them for the
effort and the invite, and made them promise to invite us if it gets
off the ground again.
We felt great about our decision to bail as we would still be able to
make it back to Boston by midnight, not including a dinner stop. As we
pulled off down the street, we could already see the retirees of the
neighborhood doing that thing they do where they come out onto the
steps and cross their arms and just watch towards the kid's house. God,
I effin' hate suburbia.
The people who organized the event were incredible, and I really give
them respect for getting as far as they did with their effort. Mt.
Ephraim can gargle nuts.
What a bummer!
