POLLO DEL MAR IN GUITAR PLAYER!

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 03 Aug 2005 20:01:30

Check out the September 2005 Guitar Player (with Eric Johnson (!!) on
the cover) Rants and Raves Column:
Pollo Del Mar
The Golden State
Musick
From the proto-punk stylings of Dick Dale, to the majestic soundscapes
of the Mermen, it's obvious that surf music can take on many different
forms. Northern California quartet Pollo Del Mar, and its guitarists
Ferenc Dobronyi and Jono Jones, contribute to the genre's oeuvre by
crafting lilting, cinematic vistas, without ever losing sight of
surf's classic melodic sensibilities. Harnessing copious amounts of
echo, reverb, and (gasp) distortion, Dobronyi and Jones weave around
each other beautifully, whether they're going full-on trippy ("As
Above, So Below") or playing it straight (the Clash's "Charlie Don't
Surf). Very well done.

So cool! It was Slacktone a few months ago, now it's PDM's turn! And I
could not agree more. What a great album from a great band!

And to think i actually bought that issue, having heard so much about
Eric Johnson on this list!
just kidding, it's awesome to see some of the best surfbands in the
world getting noticed by a mainstream mag, even if i's directed at
players rather then listeners. next up a gear feature for the Nebulas
congrats to PDM!

Brian, and all,
Wow, we can't believe it... Guitar Player. I have to
say that Darrin Fox first told me that he was going to
review this CD in March, so by now I had given up
hope. The magazine was waiting for me when I got back
from tour, and, well words fail me. I don't know if
you noticed but every month there is a small list of
what the editors are currently listening to and Fox
mentions the Astronauts "Competition Coupe/Astronauts
Orbit Campus" so he is definitely spreading the virus
within the editorial walls of GP.
Thanks,
Ferenc

Congrats - I'll have to go to my local newstand and check it out! Hope this
results in some CD sales, more people at your gigs and greater exposure for
the whole surf community. It's always really cool when surf/instro stuff

I don't think it is on the newstands anymore. They said Eric Johnson
was on the cover. Keith Richards is on the cover of the current copy.
And Congratulations to Pollo Del Mar.
I got a copy from the Library yesterday, not the Pollo one, and they
have a section where you can submit your playing to be featured and
they will write a small column on you and host two of your songs on
ernieball.com. Some of our more accomplished players should check this
out.

No, it's the latest issue (September 2005). I don't know if it's on
the newstands yet as I have a subscription. I got mine a few days ago.

I think Ivan P did something like this a few years back. They featured
a snippet of a Space Cossacks tune in an issue.
GP also ran a feature cover story on Surf & Garage music. I'll have to
find it, I have that somewhere in the house. This was in the mid or
late 90's I think. It had a round table interview with Dick Dale, Jim
Thomas, and several others who I can't remember now. Come to think of
it, I'm not sure if everyone was in the same room or not during the
interview. I need to find that as I am sure I would know the people
being interviewed now. I bought it when I was first getting into surf,
and this was my first encounter with Dick Dale referring to himself in
the third person. :-) Does anyone else remember this issue?

I remember ! I think the cover story was 'surf and
space', i have it at my parents house, which i was
just sifting through a few weeks ago. WHich reminds
me, i have tons of surf memorabilia from the 90s. I
have a MOAM experiment zero tour poster, from when i
saw them on that tour, as well as a pair of
birdstuffs, drumsticks, tons of postards and flyers, a
satans pilgrims pin from the 90s, a newspaper article
of DIck Dale when he was featured in the Asbury Park
Press ( NJ ), and tons more. i should catalogue all
this crap.
I also found my MST3K membership card from the early
90's ! N.E.R.D. !

It's the latest issue... after keifs... also we (the Neptunes) got a nice review
from GP in Feb
2000... they even did an illustration of Steve's guitar Here is an exerpt:
They also reviewed Slacktone, Los Straitjackets and the Surf monsters comp.
The called the article "The next wave of surf" which pissed off some of the
surfband
community.
Surf is far and few between in the pages of GP...
on another note, the article this month about the Great Kat... she claims "the
most exciting
thing happening in guitar is metal"?
And she is talking about classical metal... ok this happened years ago with
ritchie
blackmoore and a host of other hair rock stars... I think she spent a few too
many years
woodshedding in her room. She must have a great publicist, or it might be her
boobs... I
don't know which.

Slacktone has been reviewed twice; Ape, The Space
Cossacks and the Guitar Ace compilation have been
reviewed. After that, I am hard pressed to think of
any other surf reviews they have done in the past 10
years.

Did Man or Astro-Man? ever get reviewed? I know they probably are one
of the best known surf acts, the first several albums anyways, but I
am not sure if they are Guitar Player material. I don't know how to
put into words what Guitar Player material is but I just don't see
MoAM in that Magazine. How are they known everywhere else? Here in
Seattle you mention surf and you either get The Ventures or Man or
Astro-Man? as a response. The older crowd/geriatrics(Over 30) answers
the Ventures(They only know Walk Don't Run) and the younger kids
answer Man or Astro-Man?
And what a shameless plug that was Ferenc.
And go see The 'Verb with Pollo Del Mar and the Neptunes at the Hotel
Utah on September 25th.

I bought that GP magazine (along with the Spaghetti Western issue with Clint
Eastwood on the cover) back then...I was already into surf but not really
having internet or reading many interviews it was a great discovery for me.
I also remeber being amused by DD's third person references.
Somewhere along the the line it got lost, probably when I divorced my first
wife and moved out.
oh the memories....

Jacob, my memory is that MoAM were a part of one of the surf music
roundtable discussions, or at least featured (and interviewed) in an
article on the surf music scene somewhere around '97 or '98. And then
i seem to remember a 1 or 2-page feature on the band some four or five
years ago (post-Starcrunch era). I am very uncertain about both of
these, but there you go. I don't remember any of their CDs being
reviewed at any point, though.
Guitar Player has actually had quite a lot on surf music through the
years. They had an issue from '85 (I think) with a lengthy interview
with Paul Johnson and a long article on the Raybeats. I remember Dan
Forte AKA Teisco Del Rey doing a page-long review of the '86 South Bay
Surf Music Reunion. And then through the second half of the nineties,
surf music coverage was pretty regular in the pages of the magazine.
Constant reviews of surf CDs, one cover story, one or two full-
featured stories, etc. A lot of that had to do with Dan Forte, but
there were others that contributed as well. I think John Blair wrote
one full-length story on surf music in the nineties, and interviewed a
whole bunch of surf musicians. I'll take a look at my collection and
get the dates.

Thank you for reminding me, Neil S, it wasn't Surf & Garage, it was
Surf & Space as the cover story on that GP issue. I will definitely
look for this, it's in storage in the basement somewhere.
As far as Man or AstroMan? goes, I did read a review of
their "Experiment Zero" CD in Guitar World (or maybe it was Guitar for
the Practicing Musician - which later just became "Guitar" - I think).
I remember reading that review and that was what got me started on
this downhill decline known as my surf music habit. After reading that
review, I went to the nearest indy record store and found the MoAM?
section. They didn't have Experiment Zero, but they did have Live
Transmissions from Uranus. Seeing that they covered the theme from
MST3K (my favorite show) I had to buy it. I was blown away by the fun,
the songs, and the humor in that performance. I started buying stuff
from the groups that influenced them in the early days (Original
Surfaris, Dick Dale, Ventures), looking for surf on the new world wide
web, finding a little online merchant called Pop Records (your tie in
back to Pollo Del Mar) and here I am today.
BTW, Ferenc, if I haven't done this enough already, thank you for
starting your Pop Mart. I remember I bought the Woodies, PDM, and the
first Space Cossacks from you all within a few months of each other,
and just being staggered, no, stupified, by what I had stumbled upon.
A life altering experience.
