Morricone's guitarist/whistler performed in Califonia!

Gregory Nicoll (gregorynicoll) - 03 Aug 2005 16:49:19

Hey,
I just concluded from what's felt like an endless roadtrip
(I've essentially lived out of suitcase for the past two
months) and wanted to report that while in California I was able to
attend two live performances by Alessandro Alessandroni, the famed
guitarist/whistler who performed on the classic spaghetti western
soundtrack scores of composer Ennio Morricone.
What a thrill to hear Alessandroni play "The Good The Bad and The
Ugly" live onstage, singing the classic "ah-ahhee-ahh-ahhh" coyote
cries and whistling the melodies. The hairs stood up on the back o'
my neck -- and I mean that in a GOOD way! -- and now I can die happy.
<grin>
His gear?
Well, he alternated between acoustic and electric, but when he
played plugged-in it was ALL Fender: A vintage sunburst Strat (with
the edges of its body chipped and beat to hell) plugged straight
into a Fender Twin Reverb.
Wow....

He played solo at both gigs, acoustic the first night and
acoustic/electric at the second show.
Alessandroni was in California to promote the opening of the Sergio
Leone exhibit at The Autry Center's Museum of the American West. The
first gig was just three songs, right before a screening of THE GOOD
THE BAD AND THE UGLY at a local theatre.
The second gig was a full-length set for a members' preview of the
Leone exhibit at the museum (he played outside in the Center's
courtyard). He was also scheduled to perform the next weekend before
a showing of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, but I had to be back in Georgia
before that, alas.
I'll post some pix over on Reverborama, since the photo section here
is in a state of transition.
Wow, what a thrill to hear him whistle and play guitar -- he even
did music from the non-western film ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.
