vintage type coiled guitar cables?????

eddiekatcher - 02 Aug 2005 22:31:29

Hi guys, I'm sorta new to this surfguitar101 thing so bear with
me...Mitch (Matrix) and I were going on about our old bands from the
60's/70's (yep we've both been around that long) and were wondering
where one might dig up some "coiled" guitar cables. Those nasty
rascals were the rage way back and frankly I haven't seen one for sale
in eons....Kinda make an nice accessory for that "truly vintage"
look.....Any ideas other that E-bay? Thanks, Eddie and Mitch (The
SURGE!)

check out this search on musiciansfriend.com
but WHY WHY WHY?
coiled cables are something I will not miss... and they don't even
seem that vintage unless you think of 70s era Blondie as vintage...
(isn't there a coiled cable in the Atomic video??).

As one who was in his late teens at the end of the 60's, I remember coil-cords

John,
Check out your copy of the Ventures "On Stage" (which you do have lest you be
charged with blasphemy). The cover shows the guys in 1965 with coil chords
connectin' their Mosrites to some Japanese wanna-be Showman amps. That's vintage
enough for me. I love coil chords and buy the ones Fender makes. There around 12
clams and sometimes on sale for half that.

I find that coiled cables are great for connecting Reverb Units to the
amp. I use about a 6 foot coiled cable I got from Radio Shack of all
places. I saw it and I had to buy it. It is the pefect length. There
isn't a big mess of cable laying all over the place.

I still have a couple of those hangin' around.
Cool idea. Might have to whip out the solder gun for a repair or two. They
remind me of a 70's telephone cord. Gotta love it.

Now for those who do not miss coil chords, is it for some functional reason or
for stylistic reasons like we don't miss bellbottoms? I like coil chords 'cause

All "spoofing" aside, I used to use the coil chords back in the early 70's
because I thought they looked cool. Especially playing my white Gibson SG
through my Metal-Flake Blue, Tuck & Roll covered Kustom amp!
The part that wasn't cool was the way the coil cords tended to kink up, just
like telephone chords, and I was never able to figure out why they did this when
I wasn't moving around enough to cause that much additional twisting of the
cord. Also, even a 20' cord, tended to create a sensation of pulling me back
towards the amp, if I moved more than 8' or so away from it. This pressure
caused the connections at the plug-ends, to come unsoldered, and I'd end up
having to replace the molded plastic plug-ends with removable metal ones, and
resolder the leads every so often, which got kinda old after a while. The coil
cord could not be stored and carried as compactly as a non-coil type cord, and I
finally just went back to using plain cords.
Those coil cords sure did look cool though . . .

Those are valid complaints. Some of the thinner coil chords did kink up like
telephone chords. I have a better one that I have had since the late '70's and
it has not kinked up. It has been getting daily use for the last few years
plugged into the direct box that leads to my computer input. The Fender coil
cables are very thick and I haven't had them kink up in the last two years
either. I haven't connected direct to the amp in years so that pulling hasn't
been an issue. From the guitar, the coil cable is direct to the reverb tank and
it's a plus that the coil chord pulls itself out of the way.

through my Metal-Flake Blue, Tuck & Roll covered Kustom amp!
Those coil cords sure did look cool though . . .

Now for those who do not miss coil chords, is it for some functional reason or
for stylistic reasons like we don't miss bellbottoms? I like coil chords 'cause
they stay out of your way.

As one who was in his late teens at the end of the 60's, I remember
coil-cords being a trend that continued into the late 70's, and do recall seeing
them used by hit bands of the era, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, and
our favorite Instrumentalists, The Ventures themselves - (To see a photo of them
in action circa 1968, complete with coil-cords, go to, click "photos" go to last page of photos, and
enlarge "V6", which appears 3rd from last.) I agree with John that I don't miss
'em, though I used 'em at the time, to appear "cool".

but WHY WHY WHY?
coiled cables are something I will not miss... and they don't even
seem that vintage unless you think of 70s era Blondie as vintage...
(isn't there a coiled cable in the Atomic video??).

Man, that would be the perfect rig for glam-surf, had such a genre
existed. too cool.

This actually sounds like a cool idea worth trying...clean
up the clutter around the old Bassman.

my way is curly chord straight down to pedal board - straight chord
on the floor to reverb tank next to amp - curly chord up to amp.
now all i have to do is practice my on-the-spot dancing routines. ;-)
