RE: [SurfGuitar101] Re: waves (geography of surf influences)

following the simplistic view of surf music originating in
Southern California, the georaphy of So Cal cultures played
a huge role in influencing the surf sound:
Central Valley/ Bakersfield/ orchards and fruitstands:
bluegrass, Okie culture, Semie Moseley, Leo Fender
So Cal/ Los Angeles/San Diego: latin (pachuko/ zoot)
culture & music, soul music
Hollywood: movie music soundtracks and TV, West Coast Jazz,
easy listening & pop radio
Suburbia: TV and radio, youth culture, 'disposable income',
car culture, freeways, 'leisure culture'
Entreprenurial/ 'Wild West'/ 'DIY' culture: Semie Mosely,
Leo Fender, Dick Dale and his dad, garage bands...the Beach
Boys...
so...as you can see...'surf' seems to have had it's roots
all across the SoCal cultural landscape...once the initial
wave broke, I believe that "surf's" influence reverberated
across the nation (and around the globe).

Yeah, I think it's a good point that the various cultural elements had a
significant impact in the establishment of the Surf sound, (as well as
its timing in history: Suburbia being a good example) and it is not just
from pure musical influences and genre evolutions. [Similar things
happened culturally in the establishment of Urban/HipHop]
I won't attempt a list, but along DP's line of thinking, the 3rd Wave
cultural influences would certainly be different from the 1st. The Web
being a primary one, of course.
Yet it's always perplexing to me that bands like The Astronauts from
Colorado and The Trashmen from Minnesota had relevant Surf/Instro hits
at the time. I think you had a lot of isolated "emulation" of the SoCal
cultural exports of the period from other parts of the world.
Once Leo started making sales, I'm sure he didn't limit himself to just
SoCal.
