Hi! I just joined the group

Frank Delucca (pipelinefrank) - 30 Jul 2005 16:42:31

Hi,
I'm one of the newest members, just joined last night, and wanted to say HI to
everyone. I'm Frank, 51 yearsl, a SoCal native, and a total surf music freak.
I tend to enjoy the more trad-sounding bands, but also enjoy occasionally
listening to more modern sounding bands like Slacktone, Pollo Del Mar and The
Aqua Velvets, to name three.
I'm excited to have finally found a place where one can hear of different bands,
and keep up with local surf-band shows. I wish I'd known of this group sooner!
Regards,
PF

Anytime people "discover" the Surf music community, it's a breath of
fresh air. Welcome!

Frank,
Hope to see you out at some surf shows (aka Live Music)
It's truely where this music comes to life. And sounds better in my
opinion.
If you like Slacktone and Pollo Del Mar, you should really try to
make the Huntington Beach Pier show next Sun. the 7th.
Besides Pollo Del Mar and Slacktone
There will be a Re-union of the Halibuts( 80's and 90's So. Cal. surf
band)
The Great band, The Boardwalkers,
and The Fabulous Nomads
If you see a Big guy with a Life Guard hat and long hair, that's me,
Come up and say Hi!

Dave,
too true, Kinda like when there is a good onshore breeze blowin in,
when your at the Beach. And you breath it in, and think ahh fresh
air, no pollution in that air.
Allways good to have new recruits to the fold.

And Jeff, you certainly do your part in the recruiting. Because great
fans make great players and recruiters. Hats off.
On the one hand, the Surf/Instro "community" is standing right in front
of the public's noses, plain as day. On the other hand, it's a rather
obscure sliver of the music spectrum and society, so it needs a little
effort to be "found".
Surf is still fundamentally underground and under the "pop culture"
radar - and I understand a lot of folks like it that way. I personally
believe there's plenty of room for it to be broadened by players and
fans, and STILL stay obscure and cool. But don't expect any pices about
it on Entertainment Tonight any time soon :-)
Club owners and bookers probably have a good idea what Surf is, as they
are constantly hit on for gigs by bands. But they are always evaluating
the ROI and "pull", not necessarily the music, entertainment or social
value. Club patrons are usually not as well informed, although in
underground clubs, a lot of folks do know their stuff and do know the
differences! But in the broader club scene, if I didn't know any better,
I wouldn't know the difference in music styles by just reading bandnames
on a bill in a local rag. You gotta dig a little and find out.
A lot of people LOVE Surf/Instro and don't even know what it is or what
it's called even when they hear it. They just know, "Oh man, I LOVE that
stuff!! What are you playing? Who is that? Whoa!!" I love it when Surf
blows people out of the water like that. And when kids go nuts, it's
even more satisfying.
PR is one thing ALL bands in the Surf world need to nudge forward when
they get the chance. If you're gigging, yeah, brag about it --- but also
do it to other orthogonal "communities" on the web and to the local
media. Because it may interest new people and new people may go out to
investigate, and we all know that...
Surf has the gravitational pull of a black hole...if you get near it,
you'll get sucked in ;-)
WELCOME NEWBIES!!!
