fender reverb unit issue

John Brownlow (pinkheadedbug) - 29 Jul 2005 11:06:48

I just took delivery of a reissue 'verb I bought on ebay... it is
really clean and has obviously been well treated. However, on
plugging it in, I can barely hear the reverb even with all the knobs
turned to 10. It is *just* there.
The unit was well packed but had obviously been thrown about by UPS:
the naked valve had fallen out of its socket and the tank had fallen
off its springs. Nothing appeared to be damaged and I put it all back
together but obviously there's the possibility that something is out
of whack now.
What are the obvious things to check?

I should say that the guitar is coming through fine, but very dry...

Did you release the spring dampening lever? (Metal Bar at the bottom
of the unit. Keeps springs from bouncing around when moving the
unit...)

DP (noetical1) - 29 Jul 2005 11:35:27

The Spring Dampening Lever is a rather large somewhat
C-shaped metal slider mounted on the bottom (inside) of the
chasis (with two screws). It's job is to push the reverb
spring tank forward and hold the reverb spring tank
stationary during transport.
After transporting the reverb unit, the Spring Dampening
Lever should be slib back away from the reverb spring tank
(in other words, it should slide to the rear of the
chasis).
whew... this sounds confusing...

John:
when viewing your reverb unit from the rear of the
chasis...
The dampening lever is located on the lower left, just left
of the "center divider" on the pack chasis panel...

ok, there is no dampening lever on my unit...
I have just taken it all apart and am going to try it on the bench
and see what happens.

Is that your tank Zone Fighter? My '64 has a blue .012 resistor
coming off the dwell pot. This one doesn't appear to.

If you've already released the spring damper and it isn't giving enough 'verb:
1. Take off the front panel.
2. Make sure the RCA's are connected to the spring tray.
3. Make sure both springs are connected and vibrating freely.
4. Slap it back together and listen see if the depth of reverb hasn't returned.
I did this process, found nothing wrong yet when I slapped it back together I
musta done something right 'cause the full reverb had returned. I'm thinking a
spring was cause on the felt pad.

Subject: [SurfGuitar101] fender reverb unit issue
I just took delivery of a reissue 'verb I bought on ebay... it is
really clean and has obviously been well treated. However, on
plugging it in, I can barely hear the reverb even with all the knobs
turned to 10. It is *just* there.
The unit was well packed but had obviously been thrown about by UPS:
the naked valve had fallen out of its socket and the tank had fallen
off its springs. Nothing appeared to be damaged and I put it all back
together but obviously there's the possibility that something is out
of whack now.
What are the obvious things to check?

I tried it on the bench and now I'm getting no reverb at all
I think one of the tubes is shot. The one on the far right.
The unit has the holes where the lever used to be, but not the lever...
What pan should come with a reissue?

The model ending in B is the exact same and the only one I could find.
It works perfect.

OK I am getting reverb again (had the RCA inputs to the pan reversed)
but like I say it is very quiet. What do each of the tubes do?

If you are in a band you really want to think about getting a spring
dampener bar. It could be damaged carrying it around to gigs.

This chart explains Accutronics part numbers
The difference between B & C in the 7th feild is that the mounting
would be horizontal or vertical...
B = Horizontal Open Side Down
C = Vertical Connectors Up
Z

Yeah, I'll get one (or make one).
I took it into the amp tech and we tried swapping out the tubes and
the reverb pan with no improvement.
So now it's in the shop.
I emailed the seller... we'll see if he'll split the repair. I
already paid brokerage and duties so no point in returning it.
Apart from the fact that it doesn't work, it's very nice.

I'd have a really good amp tech replace the input and
output jacks...On the reissues they are notorious for
failing...I'm sorry that I didn't have time to read
all the postings but I assumed that you are having
trouble with a reissue....They are also notorious for
picking up RFI as in local FM radio stations. Not all
the time....just when you DON'T need it....I tried all
sorts of filtering but that printed circuit board has
some built-in gremme. We have had serveral starting
with one real early one and even though Fender has
modified the board, my most recent RI will do it
too...oh well...best of luck and let me know if you
need additional help.....Best Reverbs, Eddie Katcher
