Varatones on MTV

Jacob Dobner (jacobdobner) - 27 Jul 2005 21:20:46

I just heard Surf Blaster by the Varatones on MTV. It is pretty cool
they are playing stuff like the Varatones and Los Mel-Tones instead of
crappy surf rock that is done by a studio musician who has only heard
Misirlou. Too bad MTV won't start a surf rock channel. Kids that age
really can dig surf music but they aren't exposed to it enough. I
think the influx of young surf bands is a testament to that. The
Reluctant Aquanauts played to a large MTV crowd and the crowd really
dug it. We have young 15-16 year old kids come up to us all the time.
They are more enthusiastic then some of the older people.

All good! Congrats to the Varatones and Los Mel-Tones.
Although my opinion of MTV has declined over the years, they still have
some reach to new audiences for Surf.
I would ask, if there WAS a Surf Rock channel, would band be willing to
cut videos for it?
And isn't this somewhat of a chicken and egg phenomemnon? I don't see a
critical mass of Surf bands with promo videos to begin with.
