Re: Mosrite copies (with a hint of Baritone)

Bill Bergstrom (surfbandbill) - 27 Jul 2005 20:41:06

Hey y'all,
I've been lurking a bit, but once Mosrite talk hits the list, I just
can't keep quiet.
I don't know a TON about a lot of these "fauxs-rites", but the one
thing I heard during my search was do NOT get a Tym Mosrite. My
buddy Andy, formerly of the Hypnotic IV, is a big Moserite-phile, and
is also the reason I decided to get one after much hemming and
hawing. He said that he got a Tym Mosrite before H4 landed their
sponsorship with Fillmore Mosrite, and he couldn't STAND the thing.
He said it was heavy, clunky, awkward, and just plain didn't stay in
tune. So, out of all those, that is the one I'd say most anyone can
cross off their list.
Excellent Mosrite (like the ones zamm had) are nice. Granted, I'd
love a vibramute (and am considering getting one from Hallmark), the
roller bridges on them work just fine. They play smooth as silk, the
neck isn't QUITE the pencil-thin wonder that original Mosrites have,
but it is skinny, but the pickups really capture that tight-wound,
hopped up Mosrite tone. I got mine for $1200 after shipping, and
have trouble picking up any of my other guitars at this point.
I like the tone of a Turser, but it just doesn't have "that" sound,
probably the same issue that the Wilson Brothers guitar has. The
Turser is a good surf axe, but not a great "Mosrite copy". I've
heard good things about the Univox Hi-Flyer, and don't know about
Eastwoods or Dillons.
One other option for a faux-rite would be to check out Subway Guitars
at www.fatdawg.com. This guy has a TON of old weird guitars and
whatnot that he sells for pretty cheap. (click on weird guitars from
the main page) They have a "vibramode" which looks like a Mosrite
with P-90s and Bigsby-style trem. I've never played one, but hear
pretty good things about them, and you can definitely snag one of
these for under a grand. I think they're like $500-ish. He also
makes a guitar that makes my heart go pitter-patter.. the "baritone
jizzblaster", which is basically a JM bari guitar. *swoon*
Hope any bit of this helps,
~Bill~

First off, I want to say hey to everyone. I'm new to the group.
On that fatdawg webpage, I see those "vibramode" guitars and they look
pretty cool. What are they? Are they an actual brand of guitar or just
something they put together? Here's a photo

They appear to be a bad Mosrite copy. The German carve is like that of the
latter day Mark V, more of a "shelf" than a carve. They are something they put
together and make to order. They can be had as 12-String or baritone in addition
to standard 6-string.
