Mosrite Dealers

supertwangreverb - 26 Jul 2005 20:47:29

Does anyone know of any overseas Mosrite reissue dealers? I don't
want to go through Ed Roman.
Thanks,
Bill

Here's a site that has contact info for Roman (the only US dealer),
one in France, and one in Japan. It may be difficult buying them
through one of the overseas dealers though. Mosrite keeps pretty
tight reigns.

Thanks Shawn, too bad there isn't a cheap store like Ishibashi.
Man, Ed's prices are so unbelivable. The one time I was at his
store I remember the Mosrites as being off limits...pretty much all
the guitars there are off limits.

I don't know how great his pricing will be, but Norm Harris, owner of Norman's
Rare Guitars, was selling the Fillmore Mosrites at a respectable discount
several months ago. He's got the connections and contacts to buy from most of
the Japanese manufacturers and wholesalers, so you could give him a try.

Over the years I've purchased a few guitars from him, and he's always been
extremely reasonable to deal with. Good Luck in your search BTW!

Ishibashi used to have Mosrites, not the Fillmore but the other ones with
the "excellent" vibrato. It's not on their website any more, but maybe you
can mail them. Also Musicground London seems to have them
musicground.com/results.asp?manuID=43&Submit=Submit&catID=1&subCatID=3 And
when you google "mosrite excellent" you can find some other japanese stores
who have them. And then there is always tymguitars, expensive but handmade.

There was a company called zamminc.com that had Japanese Mosrites in
the $13-1400 range at one point, although the only one I see left
for sale is a red Ramones model.
I've been going through Mosrite GAS for about a year now, and I have
no intention of going through Roman, either, if based on nothing
else than that I've yet to see someone post a positive experience
dealing with those folks. That aside - I've relegated myself to:
a) eBay (alot of times, if you're into the "project guitar" think,
you can peicemeal one, bit by bit, or on a rare occasion, find a
reasonable Japanese remake),
b) a good, yet cheap, copy, then upgrade parts/pups/etc - when I 1st
came to the board, there was a member who mentioned grabbing one of
the Dillion Mosrite copies, ditching the Bigsby, and throwing on a
roller bridge and a Tym Vibramute (which you can now get from
Hallmark, domestically, for like $130 for a chrome version of their
Vibramute - not bad), which brings me to...
c) a Hallmark Sweptwing (that is to say, for the tone, not the
looks, although I think they look bitchin' too).
Good luck...a Mosrite is a thing of beauty.

Patrick, I like your breakdown. Maybe waiting on Ebay is the best
idea. I remember our first drummer was also a Mosrite nut and he
had an Excellent '65 which he got for around 800 bucks in the mid
90s. Which at the time seemed like a lot for a Japanese reissue.
That being said it did play better than 99% of the vintage Mosrites
I've played. I've thought about doing a modded Dillion, but I know
personally I won't be satisfied.
In the mean time...I try to remember how difficult that neck was in
hopes of extinguishing my desire for one.

I'd go with the Hi-Flyer anyday over the new version of the Sidejack.
I don't think the Sidejack got the contours right.

Hey Jacob, do you own one of the Eastwood Hi-Flyers? I've been
wondering about the body contour and the thickness...I mean, if you
look at a Mosrite or a Univox Hi-Flyer from an angle, you get the
idea that the guitar is pretty slender and sleek...kinda like here:
The Eastwoods don't seem to have that feel; they look, to me at
least, kinda squared off, almost clunky. I was hoping it's just
they way they're photographed, 'cause it's one of the only things
keeping me from buying one...
Just curious...

I have an Eastwood High-Flyer and they are thicker and less rounded
along the edges. If I have a sec, I'll take some pictures and post
them for you. They are pretty comfortable for me to play sitting.
They also have a set neck, which the Mosrites don't have.

There are several Mosrite copies out there. I have an Eastwood
High-Flyer but it doesn't have exactly the same feel as a Mosrite.
The body is thicker and doesn't have a pencil-thin neck like the old
Mosrites. I have a feeling that they're made by the same company that
makes the Jay Turser Mosrite clones. I also am leary of the Dillions.
They look nice but I see more mediocre reviews than favorable ones,
and that goes for their Jazzmaster copies as well. You might also
want to look at the Wilson Bros models. If Les Fradkin is around
here, I'm sure he can give a good description of them. They appear to
not have the reverse offset body like Mosrites. I have a hunch that
Don Wilson and Bob Bogle had them designed with a wider neck, like a
Jazzmaster, since both of them always seemed to go back to Jazzmasters.

Hey Jacob,
You prefer how the Eastwood looks to what? Don't take this as a put down type of

The Eastwood Hi-Flyer vs. the Eastwood Sidejack. I really loved the
Eastwood Tsunami. They changed that line to the Sidejack. I really
don't like how the Sidejack looks. The "dent"/contour is out of place.

Waiting on Ebay for a Japanese Ventures Model Mosrite is good BUT you need to
have Ebay contact you when the Japanese Mosrite auction appears (This is done
first by performing the search and then clicking on the "add to favorites"
option). Then email the seller immediatly if you are interested because the
auction will be gone within the day. The Ventures organization has been very
quick to get Ebay auctions for the Japanese Ventures Model Mosrites removed.
They own the copyright. The Japanese models were grey market and never had the
right to put "Ventures" on the headstock.
If you email www.zamminc.com , they will tell you that they can order the
Excellent or the Super Custom or the '63 Royal, but they can't sell 'em with
Ventures logo's.
The Excellent, Super Custom and Royal '63 are extremely well made and have THE
Mosrite sound.

Yo Patirck,
If you go the Dillion, Hallmark or cheap copy route, I suspect it will satisfy
you Mosrite jones for a month or so, but eventually you'll still want something
closer to an original Mosrite. I think the most satisfactory fix with least cost
is the "Excellent". It's 1100-1300 clams but it did the trick for me.

This post has gotten big, unfortunatly my internet is down at home
so I'm stuck to checking in every so often at work.
I agree with you Marty. Some of these copies look really good, but I
know with my own personal experinces everytime I've wanted a certain
guitar and have gone after the copy it either leaves me upgrading
the guitar to the point where it costs as much or more than the
original guitar or I sell it for a loss months later and end up
buying the real deal.
I like the look of the Eastwood High Flyer but...do the pickups
sound like the orignal Mosrites? Secondly, isn't the High Flyer a
24inch scale neck? I like that scale on the Jaguar but I don't
think that was the orignal scale on the full scale Ventures models,
and they have a set neck? Its to my understanding that the bound
bodied sidejack Mosrites that the Ventures had on earlier were
infact setneck guitars. The only reason I'd be so picky is because
I like the sound of the guitars I hear on the mid 60s Ventures
albums, and the Ghastly Ones.

The old Mosrites and Japanese copies are 24 3/4th inch scale, I'm purdy sure
(but too lazy to pull 'em out to check). I have both set neck and bolt on neck
Mosrites (copies and original). There is no significant difference in sound on
any of the Mosrites. There may be a hair more sustain from the set neck. If
sound is your primary concern, then the main thing you need to be picky about is
the pick-ups.
