Inexpensive Baritone guitars for surf?

John Brownlow (pinkheadedbug) - 25 Jul 2005 23:12:54

Since the 12-string discussion threw up a terrific bargain which
several of us apparently were able to get hold of, as well as a bunch
of recommendations for other guitars, how about baritones?
The obvious (new) choices at the top end of affordable are the Fender
Jag Baritone ($700 most places), and the Jerry Jones Baritone ($900
list). Then there's the Burns Barracuda ($700 from music123... less
in a few places that don't have it in stock)... moving down the price
scale there's the Gretsch Jet Baritone which MusiciansFriend has for
$380 c/w dings and scratches or about $450 fresh and minty. Moving
down further there's the Danelectro Hodad Baritone and the vanilla
Danny baritone which go for around $250-300 on eBay.
Heading downtown is the Jay Turser for around $230...
Are these guitars really useful for (not necessarily trad) surf...
I'd imagine so. I've never played any of them. Some seem to be
designed to be tuned an octave below standard EADGBE tuning, some a
fifth to ADGBEA, and some A fourth to BEADF#B which seems the most
attractive to me since it gives you nice open E A and D strings along
with a low B.

I use what was sold as a Dano Six-String bass as a baritone and it works
beautifully. It has a 30" scale. I tune it to a G below the standard guitar low
E. The string gages are 16, 20p, 26, 46, 56, 68 (roundwound). With those gages
and the 30" scale, it gets way down and twangy.

Just want to mention that a really, really cheap way to go is to try tuning your
strings
down. Any lower than C on my Jazzmaster gets too flappy to be useful, but for C
and up, it
gets a wonderful deep throat tone.
Also, I really love it when guys play a solo on the low E just by twisting the
tuning peg--
Junior Brown, Nokie Edwards come to mind.

I was going to mention that early today. I tuned down to C to play
Rock Lobster and it was barely functional. I have always thought Man

There's also the Eastwood Sidejack Baritone in the lower price range:

Wasn't the classic 60's song "Lonely Surfer" lead played on a
baritone?
It was quite a thrill for me to see The Hellbenders (twangy spaghetti
western / cowboy rock) pull out the Dano baritone for a few
numbers...it was really bad-ass and fit the genre perfectly. I imagine
it would work well for spy type tunes as well.
I believe Mike from The Urban Surf Kings mentioned he uses one from
time to time.

I *think* there is also a Richie Podolor song from the 60's that
features a baritone...? I'm gonna have to go home and try to find the
song title.

Lose the Super Slinkys. ;-) With a gage 50-something it will be a little better
than barely functional though it will be loose.

You should consider a Bass VI. Listen to Sixty Second to What by Brent
C. Cooper off of the For A Few Guitars More compilation. Amazing sound
he gets out of that guitbass.

Yeah, Brandt from the Exotics just got a Eastwood Sidejack baritone. He
really digs it, although I haven't seen it/played it yet. We just ordered a
couple of the regular six string Sidejack Mosrite copies from Eastwood.
Brandt's is fine, mine needs a new nut so it stays in tune. They look great
and sound great though. You cannot beat the price, that's fersure.

I played one of the Eastwood baritones today at Capsule Music in
Toronto after emailing the guy who runs the company. They are now out
of stock so the only ones you can buy are the ones already out there
with retailers. I liked the guitar a lot, although the pickups were a
bit plinky compared to a Jag baritone they also had there. They
certainly seem to be nicely made for the price, although Capsule were
charging almost a 100% markup on the web price.

I meant he should buy a Fender Bass VI. I saw a Burgundy Mist one with
matching headstock go for $8000. It was gorgeous. The Jap ones go for
$2500 but the person who started the thread should go vintage.

is this some alternate meaning for 'inexpensive' I wasn't previously
aware of?

;) I was focused in on the "inexpensive" part too...
...although a Fender Bass VI is a great "dream machine"...I
didn't think it qualified as inexpensive...inexpensive
basses cost less than $1000 in my book...
I think they person who started the thread was looking for
an old Jeep rather than a brand new Range Rover, if you
know what I mean...
