Amp Trouble

Eric Hutchinson (ehutch247) - 23 Jul 2005 16:12:22

I've been having some problems with my amp lately (65 reissue twin fender
reverb) and since I'm a tube amp newbie I don't really know what the
situation is. For the past couple of times I've turnd it on i've been
getting a "staticy fuzz" sound that comes through 100% of the time it's on,
when playing it's almost like distortion. At first I would turn the amp off
and on again and it would disappear but now it's a persistant problem. I
just bought this used not too long ago so I hope this wasn't something the
previous owner knew was coming on. Again I don't know how serious this is,
if I just need to replace the tubes or what. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tryied on both channels? Normal and vibrato/reverb.
And do you have this problem on both channels or just on one of them?

Both channels for each do the same although the channels for Vibrato produce
more noise.

Hmm... I'm afraid this is something for an amp tech. Especially since you
are a tube newbie.
It could be the phase splitter tube or a power tube, but it might as well be
something else. So don't go changing tubes just like that because I'm not
sure it will cure the problem.

Hey Eric. Something similar happened to my Showman. I got the output
tubes replaced and then it stopped. The sound it made was terrible,
almost unbearable to listen to. Sound a little different. You should
check out Gary Tronix up in Stanwood. He is so much cheaper than all
the other techs in the area and he has no waiting list. His number is
(360) 629-3004.

Thanks for all the help i made sure the tubes weren't loose, but it's still
the same. looks like i'll just take it into that tech, no sense in me
foolin' around when I don't have a clue. Lucky me, I have to take my guitar
in too, trouble loves company.

I had something that sounded similar, turned out to be a blown
resistor over one of the power tubes.
as said by others, could be so many things that a tech should look at
it before you put money in expensive tubes - just my 2 cents of
course.
