Hank Marvin's Effects/Amp

Casey Cash (surfgitar) - 23 Jul 2005 06:45:54

Had the chance to watch the Shadow's DVD recently (very nice) and
wonder if anyone knows what type of effects/amp Hank Marvin uses with
his stratocaster? Sounds like some type of delay, maybe an analog tape
loop similar to the old echoplex. It seems to be an very important
part of his sound. Thanks

Casey, Hank has been using an Alesis Q2 and/or Q20 for something
like six or seven years. (I think both units have been out of
production for a few years now.) They are programmed by a couple of
guys who very thoroughly researched the vintage European multi-head
tube tape-echo machines, and replicated the various staggered-head
patterns as well as the particular tape-like decay of repeats. They
programmed the Alesis units with various echo patterns, and Hank can
now bring up an appropriate echo setting by just flicking to a new
setting (actually his guitar tech does this offstage for him during
his live shows, so he doesn't have to even think about it). These
are also available to the public - go here for more info:
or here for the direct link to the echo page:
You can also get the programmed echos with the Zoom RFX 2000/2200
units. I have one of those, and it sounds very good, though I heard
that it doesn't sound quite as good as the Alesis unit. Also, check
out Sounds Like The Shadows echos:
These are designed for Yamaha Magicstomp floor units, which can now
be bought new for $100 (I just got one a couple of weeks ago), and
the echoes guys will email you the programming for $55 which you can
download into the unit. I've been hearing very good things about
these echos, and will try them out very soon. The advantage over
the Zoom unit is that it's just a floor unit rather than a rack-
mounted one.
As far as the amps. Hank stopped using Vox AC30s in the mid-'80s
(after several of them crapped out on him). He used some Mesa
Boogie amps for a while (Mark II or III, I think). In the nineties
he mostly used a Matchless DC-30 and then around 2000 started using
his signature model by KCP, made by the Echoes From the Past guys.
It's very similar to AC30/DC30. This year he used their newest model
called Pinnacle, though those crapped out on him during their
European tour, too, so he went back to Matchless from what I
understand. It appears that the Pinnacles broke down because of
some simple manufacturing error, but otherwise are really good
amps. You can also check them out on the EFTP site.
Hope that helps.

Ivan,
Thanks for your amazingly detailed and helpful reply! I usually
prefer to play straight into the amp, but recently learned a couple
of Shadow's tunes and it would be great to be able to get that
echo/delay sound for them. Seems like the Yamaha Magicstomp might be
the most practical place to start for me. Thanks Again! Casey

Hi,
There are also some other very nice digital echo's arround. One of
them was made by a Belgain Shadows fan and he called his device "
Atlantis" after a Shadows song. I know two guys who have these and
they really nail the sound. Although now out of production and not
being cheap, they really sound very good. This is also a rack unit
with programmed echo's. The guy must have take his time for it. I
once saw him preforming with the "Atlantis" at a guitar show,
playing a sort of "best of the schadows", not only did he bring a
very nice interpretaion of the Hank Marving playing, the sound was
there!
As far a vintage tape Echo's go, I really like those, but they are
not very reliable imo. I recently came across an old "Dynacord ECC-
280 echo unit, very nice, but not a stable platform....
And Casey, did you get some more info on the "deep blue" Jaguar?

Jerry, appreciate the aditional info. I'm sure you're right about the
vintage tape units being unreliable. Looked at a Magicstomp in the
local Sam Ash yesterday but it was closer to $170 vs $100. Was also
told that a new version of this is going to be available soon, so may
wait and check that out before deciding anything. Haven't actually
seen the blue Jaguar yet, its in another town I visit occasionaly and
may take a while. Apparantly "deep" blue was not a color option in '63
- maybe its faded from another color or perhaps the owners memory is
just a bit foggy. He said it hadn't been out ot it's case for 10 or 15
years. I'll post details and maybe a pic if the deal works out. Thanks
again, Casey

Casey, go here:
d/151558
$99, as promised! This is where I bought it two weeks ago. "Sounds
Like The Shadows" echoes will run you another $55. A hell of a deal,
I think.

Ivan,
Harmnony central had also had a user review saying how well the
Magicstomp could emulate the Hank Marvin sound. This is a good deal;
maybe they are clearing them out to make way for the model II's.. I'll
have to see if the new models have anything to make them worth the
extra $$
Thanks, Casey

Ivan,
I've also been considering buying and effects box - how is the
Magicstomp for things other that the Shadow's echo type sounds? Are
the compressor/chorus and other effects OK> Thanks, Casey

It seems the major difference between the old and new versions is
the headphone jack on the new ones. I'm sure there's more, but I
don't want to pay $200+. So this seemed like an incredible deal.
As far as the other effects, quite honestly, I've spent a total of
20 minutes with it so far. The effects seem really good, but those
were just my first impressions. It does do an impressive fuzz,
usually a weak spot for many multi-effectors. Anyway, I wish I
could tell you more, but i can't yet.

Well, I got the new Magicstomp II; it seems to have some pretty nice s
ounds as it comes from the factory. Really good reverb and tape echo.
Not sure if it was worth the extra $100 for the capability to deep
edit, haven't tried it yet. The "Sounds Like The Shadows" guys said
they can e-mail the patches that emulate Hank Marvin sounds for $54,
but they want it by wire which is another $50 at my bank, trying to
find a cheaper way to pay. Thanks for the info on this product and the
patches. Casey
