Jaguar Mute Foam

mutebar - 22 Nov 2002 17:41:14

I recently purchased a cherry 65 Jaguar, and the mute bar foam
is, of course, badly deteroated. Since Fender sell Jaguar reissues,
this foam must be available, but, of course, it is not listed
anywhere in the Fender website.
I received one tip, and that was to cut some foam surrounding the
spring tank in my SuperReverb, which I will do as a last resort, but
surely someone out there sells new foam, so I don't have to butcher
my reverb.

If you have a WalMart close by, go to the crafts
department and look for something called "Foamies"
they are thin neopreen sheets that come in 8x11 sheets
and you can cut them into any shape you need. It would
probably work for what you need. I know you can get
them over seas also. This UK site has a pic to show
you what I'm talking about

The AV reissues have what appears to be foam weather stripping type
material on them. You can get that pretty cheap.
Jim Shine on the Fender Forum has said that the vintage guitars used
something that is similiar to what is used on the thick mouse pads of
today.
As a last resort, you could buy a new mute from Smart Parts.
Good luck,

thick mousepads are made of neopreen, like a divers
wet suit. or are you talking about the felt material
they put on top?

Jim Shine said the original mute foam was similiar but not exactly
like mouse pads. I have two mousepads on my desk. One is just a thin
piece of laminated plastic with a thin piece of rubber underneath it.
The other one has a thick foam substance topped with a thin
nylon/felt like layer. I think he was referring to the latter...the
fat foamy part. I can easily see how you could cut up a mouse pad and
glue it to the mute and it would work, providing you peeled off the
top thin layer.
The foam on my reissue Jaguar however is much more like the foam
weather stripping you would put around a window or something.

The old stuff is like Allsop mousepads with the "grained" backing. Fender
used a thicker type. It is attached with 3M auto weatherstripping adhesive.
The same stuff was used under the pickups as well.
