analog versus digital (vintage/lo-fi)

DP (noetical1) - 22 Jul 2005 14:43:57

howdy group:
anyone out there have a preference re: recording to analod
versus recording to digital? anyone still using tape
during the recording phase? any analog mastering going on
out there? any analog distribution (vinyl or cassettes)?
back in the old days we did AAA (analog recording, analog
mastering, analog distribution)...these days, in my little
home studio, I'm totally DDD (digital recording, digital
mastering, digital distribution)...
any ADD (analog, digital, digital) or AAD (analog, analog,
digital) recordists out there in surf-land?
anyone want to discuss the pros/cons of their favorite
recording techniques?
inquiring minds would like to know.

We did our recordings analog but then dumped them on to the computer
for final mixing. Does that still count?
The tape recorder we used wasn't TOO old. It was an old 8 track
from the 70s I believe. I found it to be a lot of hassle and
worrying about the tape running out during recording. I really know
NOTHING about recoring or recording techniques, so I'm probably not
the best guy to respond to this, however I do find it interesting.
One thing I've found is that a lot of recording engineers like to
keep the amps in seperate rooms, closets, etc. When we did this I
didn't like the sound, so we tried recording everything in one big
room, but still using multiple microphones. I think doing it that
way captures much more of a live sound. Everything sounded stale
when I had my amp in the closet. Again, my knowledge in recording
techinques in minimal.

In the tape days, as an audiophile, I was always trying to eliminate hiss,
limited frequency response, limited dynamics and cross talk so I welcomed
digital. On the other hand, I also have nostalgia for some of those tape
limitations, especially the natural compression of tape. But ya gotta love all
the incredible conveniences of digital. If I think my digital recording needs a
bit of tape style compression, there are plug in's that affect a good facsimile.
Some use tape as a sound processor on the way to the digital desk.

I think I prefer the digital recording and mixing. It makes it a lot
easier to to mix the tracks, since I can see visually how everything
lines up, and tweak the effects as much as I need to, without
degredation from mutiple record passes..
As for distrib.. I dunno. I still buy CDs, but I end up ripping them to
mp3 and shelving the discs. My own stuff I mostly put out as mp3, tho I
do have a track on the Corelia Records "Beyond the Sea" CD:
