indorock: andy tielman dvd

mono_tones_1 - 22 Jul 2005 05:28:30

a while back we had a thread on indorock and Andy Tieleman, and I
mentioned a dvd that had just come out. Just happened to come across
it yesterday, and I bought it - so here are my findings.
defintly not for people only interested in surf, or the instrumental
side of indo rock.
the concept of the dvd (a live registration) is that it is concert of
songs that andy tielman played throughout his life, chronologically
odne, with comments of Andy inbetween songs. a theatre thing than a
rock concert.
but, indo rock was about a couple of things: ripping guitar
instrumentals, but also rock and roll songs, american songbook stuff
(my way!) and traditional indonesia folk songs, mostly in the style
of blue bayou.
the dvd has all of this, and the 'ripping instro' part is rather
under represented. there isn instrumental medly, les paul guitar, a
few others. and a ripping version of black eyes. definitly indo-rock!
there is great guitarplaying on the other songs as well, esp the rock
and roll songs (mostly elvis covers) - but it's not what people on
this list are looking for, and that goes for the rest of the dvd even
more.
The dvd is very intersting for people interested in the musical as
well as other history of indonesian people in the netherlands.
Personally, I also like it a lot on the human interest level - the
guy is an icon, at least in the netherlands, he's pushing 70 - and i
think he made the dvd as a sort of monument for himself, but also for
his parents and family. it's called "that's my life", I guess that
shows the intentions behind the cd. the dvd is shot in one of the
hagues poshier venues, and coming from the indo background, that must
mean something to him. So it is a bit weird, he does all kinds of
things that are totally unrock - having his 11 year old doughter
bring him his guitar, wear a black 'n gold Elvis in Vegas style suit,
shyly and nervously introducing every song with some anecdote about
how his father played that song on their porch in Indonesia, or
something alike. from a musical perspective, decent, with on or two
that rip it up. for surf lovers not a lot there. as a human interest
documentary, very moving, for who already knows the man, I guess.
the tech data:
red Les Paul standard through Fender Tone-master piggyback, with
heavy tape echo style delay. (But two jazzmasters in teh backing
band!)
extra features on the dvd are pictures from the old days, and videos
shot aroun the concert.
If I find a cd full of ripping instro stuff by Andy Tielman, I'll let
you know.

Thank you Wannes, this was a great post. Is the DVD in PAL format?

that is a good question - I know that there are differnet formats - but
I've alsoheard most dvd players play both anyway. (a while ago in a
thread about bud browne movies - or was that video)
in any case, the box doesn't say pal. there is a section that says 'dvd
video / then "2.0" in a small square box / then "DVD9" - maybe these
icons mean anything to you? I'll try to figure it out some other way
