Surf effects

wattage12 - 21 Jul 2005 13:55:01

Can anyone give me any idea what type of equipment or effects to use to
get a good clean distorted surf sound? I currently play a Tele-Caster
with a Fender Priceton 2x10 amp.
Also is anyone familiar with the band fIREHOSE that once was?
Thank you,
Steve

I remember Firehouse. I'm an ex-metal head. Shhhhhhhh. Don't tell anybody.
I would say go for a strat, Fender Twin, and a Reverb Tank for starters.
Caution: Your about to get a million different opinions.

steve:
I will address your 2nd question 1st: I am a huge fan of
the minutemen (d boone, mike watt, george hurley)...and i
do own several mike watt/ firehose cds. good old watt can
really play the "thud stick"...
now, back to your first question:
to get a "clean distorted surf sound" I'd reccomend
checking out Agent Orange's "Bitchen Summer" EP or their
"Living in Darkness" CD...
Equipment might be a Fender or Vox tube amp... a decent
12AX7 preamp (like a Blue Tube box) and either onboard
reverb or a decent outboard reverb tank/ or reverb pedal
effect.
Single coil pickups on your guitar might be nice for surf
tones...but, for a distorted-surf type sound, I think even
Gibson style humbuckers might do the trick for you.
So in otherwords, you will probably have to experiment a
bit to find the tone you are seeking.
good luck,

Hey Steve,
Isn't a good CLEAN distorted surf sound an oxymoron? Although distortion isn't
discussed
much for surf, there are times when it has its place.
You should be able to get a useful amount of overdrive by turning up that
Princeton until
it starts to break up. Beyond that, I really like the standard Ibanez TS-808 or
TS-9 pedals,
which give a nice amount of overdrive that is warm and tube-like. I use a Visual
Sound
Jekyll & Hyde Ultimate Overdrive which has two channels - one like the TS-808,
the other
like a metal distortion pedal. That way, I get mild distortion with one stomp,
heavy rock
distortion on the other stomp pedal, and a full-on grunge sound with both
channels open.
A very versatile pedal, reasonably priced.

I have to echo Gavin's endorsement of the Ibanez TS-9. The reissues are great,
and not terribly expensive, either. It has great warmth, even at lower settings.

If it's a pedal you're looking for, I bought a Rat Proco for that very
reason "surf with distortion" but promptly sold it, because it made the amp
sound like i was hearing it from behind a wall among other reasons. I then
bought a Voodoo labs sparkledrive OD pedal, and will fully endorse it just
alone for the OD sound but it also has a clean knob which also helps to
control how distorted or clean a sound you want.

funny that, the Rat is the only distortion pedal I'll touch...
the controls are very interactive... the best thing to do is turn the
filter all the way off, dial in the amount of distortion you need,
then shelve off the treble until it feels right. A little goes a
long way.
the Big Muff is great too but it's too woolly for most surf IMO.
However combined with an octaver it can give you some great 70s
noises for those porn-soundtrack moments.

I think what everyone is really looking for is a true FUZZ pedal.
If setup correctly it won't add OD to the input. Instead it will add
color to the guitar. For years I used OD's with Rock/Blues bands, now
had I'm with Neptunes I've been on the hunt for "The Uncluttered
Distortion". What I ended up with is a Tweak Fuzz. It's new and it's
wild. It is NOT to be used as a OverDrive Gain device because it will
sound really bad. But if you use it as a color device it become the
Buzz you need for Surf. "CliCk-buUUuUuZZZzzzzzzz!"
While you're there, check designer's pedals too.

So is it the OD signal from the distortion pedals that
"sucks" the tone? I haven't had a chance to play my
pedal (a Digi Hot Rod) through a tank since I got rid
of my Premier, but it has ProCat and Fuzzface settings
that I had planned on using.

I'd like to know. I like the sound of a breaking up amp, just slight
crisp - but you cant use that if you also want to use real clean
tone, at least not live.
overdrive pedals never seem to work real well, maybe because they sit
before the tank? I tried various boss's, using the od-1 now, but it's
still not very good.
but i don't know that much about od pedals - I'd welcome tips on
those too. 'slight crunch that works before the tank' is what I 'd be
looking for.
Fuzz does work. I have a fulltone soulbender and a verbafuzz (kudos
to nebula Dano for the tip on that one). the fulltone is very
versatile with plenty of options, very complicated to set up, but it
has a lot of great sounds. verbafuzz, at half the price, gives
classic BUZZZZ - a one trick pony, but it's a trick that always
works. We've actually dedicated a song to the verbafuzz,
called 'revenge of the verbafuzz', plan to record it in a month or
two.
but, both are real heavy fuzzboxes, and don't work on minimal
settings.

I recently got a ASHBASS FUZZbrite...
(She also sells them on ebay)
It is a Mosrite FUZZrite clone and it absolutely nails that Davie
Allan/Ventures 2000 Pound Bee fuzz sound. (The MP3s on her web page do
not do the pedal justice.) It handles chords well and has great
sustain.
I've tried lots of Fuzz boxes some good for one thing or another
(Prescription Experience, ZVex Fuzz Factory, EH Big Muff, Black Cat
SuperFuzz, Homebrew UFO) and a bunch of crappy ones. None of them had
"that sound" like the FUZZbrite does.
So far it has worked with some of my guitars better than others. With
my Burns Bison, Guild S100 and Agile IJ Cool Cat (with GFS Liverpool
pickups) it sounds amazing. I have a SX "Tele" that sounds great with
everything else I've tried with it but it just can't push the
FUZZbrite properly. My SX "Strat" (with GFS Vintage AlNiCo Stagger
pickups) sounds OK with it but is less than spectacular. Haven't tried
it with my Jazzguar (Jaguar with Jazzmaster pickups installed) which
is hard to get to in my room full of crap right now...
One thing I've noticed is that the FUZZbrite picks up radio signals
occasionally. My Fuzz Factory does that too, might have something to
do with having three radio station transmitters a few blocks from my
house...

The Sanner Fuzzrite is made by the guy who made the Mosrite Fuzzrite. It's the
worst fuzz you will ever hear and that's what is so great about it. Like the
Mosrite Fuzzrite, you can't play chords through it. It's for single notes. As
someone mentioned about the Buzzrite, it's the 2000lb Bee sound and the Davie
Allan "Blues Theme" sound. Sanner made a couple of batches. l don't know if he's
still at it.

My brother has a Sanner FuzzRite which sounds almost exactly like my
Ashbass FuzzBrite. I was looking for a Sanner when I came across the
FuzzBrite. They seem to be hard to come by lately; the last one I saw
on ebay was being sold by Ashbass (I wonder where she got her circuit
for the FuzzBrite from...) and went for a pretty penny.
His Sanner does chords OK (of course my ham-fisted "chords" usually
involve 3 strings or less. ;-)

Yes totally different!! I was refering to fireHOSE not house. Please. If you
have not heard FIREHOSE you should really check out thier music. It's different
and hard to explain. It is like Surf Punk with a touch of Jazz.
