surf mashups

Rob Campbell (robmantid) - 20 Jul 2005 16:29:29

Ok this is certainly pushing the limit of what is "surf" but thought
some of you might enjoy it for the sake of completeness:
Sounds For The Sun-Set: 2005 is a concept mash-up album from RIAA
(Really Interesting Audio Adventures) that combines hard rock with
surfer music.
examples:
1. HOLIDAY INN: CAMBODIA - Martha & the Vandellas "Heatwave" vs The
Dead Kennedys "Holiday In Cambodia" and plenty of thrift-store record
sound bytes
2. BOP DON'T RUN- The Ramones "Blitzkreig Bop" vs The Ventures "Walk Don't Run"
3. TRICKY WIPEOUT - Run-DMC "It's Tricky" vs The Surfaris "Wipeout"
4. SWEET CALIFORNIA GIRL O' MINE - The Beach Boys "California Girls,"
The Beastie Boys "Brass Monkey," Guns n Roses: "Sweet Child O' Mine,"
intro-The Surf Coasters, beach movie bits

It doesn't push the limits of surf because it isn't surf, or
instrumental surf as we define surf. Sure there is some Beach Boys but
the Beach Boys aren't surf anymore if you play a Guns and Roses song
on top of it. I was hoping to hear the Surf Coasters song. It is one
of my favorites of theirs but then it went into several other songs at
the same time.
This isn't very musical to me. I call this playing two songs at the
same time. Could I play some Bach over N Sync and call it something
completely new?
